Local athletes place at Alabama Sports Festival

A number of Morgan County athletes won medals during the 30th Alabama Sports Festival held in the Birmingham metropolitan area June 22-24.

Three athletes won gold various divisions of the javelin throw. Ashton Pennington, a Hartselle High graduate and former AHSAA state champion, took gold in the young female division with 37.01m throw. Pennington signed a track and field scholarship with the University of South Alabama.

Her coach, Jim Fuqua, also took first in the 55-59 male division with a throw of 46.65m.

Falkville’s Daniel Lockhart also took gold in the intermediate male division with his 41.27m effort. He added a bronze medal with a 26.8m discus throw in the intermediate male division.

Canaan Smith of Falkville also took third with a 46.5m throw in the young male division of the javelin.

Trey Guthery of Falkville won silver in the intermediate division of the high jump with a jump of 1.65m.

The Hartselle Shamrocks coached by Patrick Patterson won the bronze medal in the U10 male/coed soccer division.
