Six more candidates file for city races on Thursdsay

The number of candidates running for political offices in Hartselle soared to 12 on Thursday as five more persons filed qualifying papers with City Clerk-Controller Rita Lee.

Thursday’s qualifiers were: Lee Hartsell, mayor; Bill Smelser, City Council Place 2; George Hearring and Karen Owens, City Council Place 3; Tom Chappell, City Council Place 4; and Kenneth (Ken) Doss, City Council Place 5.

Hartsell is a newcomer to politics, Smelser and Chappell are incumbent council members, Hearing last sought a seat on the Council in 2000 and Owens is seeking a public office for the first time.

Qualifying of candidates for Hartselle mayor, city council and school board positions began Tues., June 3, and will continue until 5 p.m. on Tues., July 17.

First day qualifiers on Tues., June 3, were: Don Hall, mayor, Johnnie Howell, mayor Kenny (K.T.) Thompson, City Council, Place 1; and Jason Armstrong, City Council Place 5.

First day qualifiers for Hartselle School Board were: Jennifer Sittason, Place 4; Monica “Monty” Vest, Place 1; and Randy Sparkman, Place 2.
