Competition abounds for vacant council posts
Published 12:03pm Monday, July 9, 2012Five candidates have qualified for two vacant positions on the Hartselle City Council.
The most competitive race is for Place 5, which is currently held by mayoral candidate Don Hall. Franklin Delano Turney qualified on Monday morning and will face Kenneth “Ken” Doss and Jason Armstrong.
George Hearring and Karen Owens are both vying for Place 3. Mark Mizell currently holds Place 3 but is not seeking re-election since his family is moving out of the city limits by the end of this term.
However, Place 1 Councilman Kenny Thompson, Place 2 Councilman Bill Smelser and Place 4 Councilman Tom Chappell are currently unopposed in their respective re-election bids.
No more mayoral candidates have qualified since Lee Hartselle, Johnnie Howell and Hall did last week.
Candidates have until July 17 to qualify for the August municipal election.
