Preparing for World Series
Published 12:33pm Wednesday, July 18, 2012At least 10 teams from across the Southeast will be coming to Hartselle this weekend to compete in the Dixie Youth Region II AA Baseball World Series beginning Friday night.
Ashley Balch, president of Hartselle Youth Baseball, said he and his crew have been working round-the-clock for weeks preparing for the tournament – from coordinating activities during the opening ceremonies to making sure each team has a host team.
“We’re excited to host the World Series here in Hartselle,” Balch said. “It’s a lot of work, but it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
There will be four from Alabama, two of which will be from Hartselle. South Carolina is sending three teams, along with the winners and runners-up from Florida and Georgia.
Balch is expecting each team to bring about 50 to 75 people, which could bring as many as 700-800 people to Hartselle for the tournament.
“We’re hoping for a big crowd during the tournament,” Balch said. “And we hope that translates into more revenue for the city.”
The action will kick off on Friday night with opening ceremonies. The teams will also have a party at the Hartselle Aquatic Center.
Games begin on Saturday morning. Each team is guaranteed at least two games. The tournament will end on Tuesday with the finals beginning around 11 a.m.
