Brewer (0-2) fell to Boaz (2-0) on Friday night in a heartbreaking home opening loss 56-19.

“It’s not a sharp corner to turn,” said Brewer head coach Dan Styles. “We tried to win small battles so that the war would take care of itself, but there was not a ton of small victories tonight. We have a lot of young kids that we have to keep their heads up. Boaz does what they do well. They took advantage of our lack of communication in the secondary. We let them off the hook many times. We have to find a way to win the small battles to win the game.”

Brewer fed off an exciting home crowed to start the game. Sophomore Nicholas Humphries took the opening kickoff to the Brewer 31-yard line to start the Patriots offense. Two plays later senior quarterback Weston Pritchett connected to Brendon Deberry on 14-yard screen pass. However, Pritchett was forced off the field due to injury. The Patriots stalled on the drive and were forced to punt. Pritchett would return to the game to attempt the Brewer punt.

Boaz muffed the punt and was forced to begin the drive on their 16-yard line. The high potent Boaz offense kicked into gear driving 84 yards in their opening drive to set up a Peyton Gilliland 20-yard touchdown run. The Conner Parrish point after attempt was good giving the pirates a 7-0 lead.

Brewer’s offense struggled the remainder of the first quarter with two turnovers on downs. Boaz struck once more in the first quarter with a 63-yard drive capped off by a Casey Wood three-yard touchdown carry as the first quarter expired giving the Pirates a 14-0 lead.
