One escapee turns self in, another at large

One of the two escapees from a work detail Sunday has turned himself into the Morgan County Sheriff’s Department.

Sheriff Ana Franklin said Steven Carl Mears, 24, of Decatur was taken into custody by investigators Kyle Wilson and Chad Smith Friday at 12:30 p.m.

According to a press release, members of the criminal investigation division had been pressuring family and acquaintances of Mears, hoping he would turn himself in.

Mears made contact with investigator Wilson and arrangements were made for Mears to turn himself in at the Sheriff’s Office. He was arrested without incident.

Johnny Wayne Johnson of Cullman is still wanted by the sheriff’s office.

Johnson is described as a white male, 5-foot-11 185 pounds with brown hair and green eyes. He has a tattoo above his left eye and one across his throat. Mears is a white male, 5-foot-9 180 pounds with brown hair and blue eyes.

Johnson was in jail on charges of possession and manufacturing of a controlled substance. Mears was facing a probation violation charge.
