Brewer’s JV girls basketball team claimed its fifth Morgan County Tournament title in a row by defeating Hartselle 41-26 in the finals Saturday.

The win gave the Lady Patriots a 14-4 record on the season while Hartselle dropped to 16-6.

The Lady Tigers grabbed an early lead thanks to back-to-back baskets by Riley Corum and were ahead 6-4 with a minute to go in the first quarter. The lead didn’t last long, however, as Taylor Ledbetter drained a trey with eight seconds left in the first period to give her team a 9-6 edge. The Lady Patriots led the rest of the way, 22-11 at the half and 30-18 after three quarters.

“We expect a battle anytime we play Hartselle.” said Brewer coach Ron Smith. “This is the third time we’ve played them this season and it’s always hard to beat the same team three times in the same year.”

“I thought our pressure kept their offense off balance and enabled us to score some points in transition,” he added. “It was a good win and leaves us with only two more regular season games.”
