Bender to compete for 5A title, Smith vying for third place

Hartselle’s Clint Bender has a chance to become a state champion Saturday at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville.

Bender will take on Athens’ Bolton Patton in the Class 5A, 195-pound championship match Saturday. The championship round begins at 11:30 a.m.

Joining him in competition is fellow Tiger Logan Smith, who defeated Maurico Mendoza from Moody with a pin Friday in the consolation semifinals.

Smith will take on Southside-Gadsden’s Landon Thompson in the Class 5A, 113-pound third place match Saturday. Consolation finals begin at 9 a.m.

Both wrestlers are guaranteed to medal at the state meet.

Four other wrestlers competed, but all opened with losses and went into the consolation bracket.

Michael Prince came up just short of medaling in the 145-pound weight class. He lost a heartbreaker 8-5 to Homewood’s Jaquan Barber in the consolation semifinals.

Matt Watson (132), Ryan Nowka (152) and Oliver Duncan (220) were unable to make it out of the consolation quarterfinals in their respective weight classes.
