Lady Tigers win 1, lose 2 in Spain Park Invitational

Hartselle’s Lady Tigers struggled with cold hands and cold bats at the Spain Park Invitational Tournament in Birmingham on Friday and Saturday, winning one game and losing two against tough opponents.

Hewitt-Trussville edged the Lady Tigers in the opening game of pool play, 7-6. Hartselle won over Dothan by a score of 3-2 in an international tie-breaker in Friday’s second round of pool play and fell to Curry by a score of 1-3 in the first round of the tournament on Saturday morning.

The Lady Tigers completed the tournament with a record of 5-3-1.

“We had plenty of hits (nine) against Hewitt-Trussville but they just had just one more,” said Hartselle head coach Christy Ferguson. “In our next game against Curry Saturday morning, our bats were as cold as the weather.”

In the Hewitt-Trussville contest, Taylor Wascavage doubled and drove in three runs, Madeline Sittason had a double and two RBIs, Haley Jared doubled and singled and had an RBI and Kayla Faulk had two singles. Ashley Boggs, Sarah Ellen Battles and Jada Hayes each singled.

In the Dothan game, Sittason forced the tie-breaker by driving in Baylee Holt with a based-loaded infield single. Battles scored the winning run on a single by Wascavage.

Hayes was the winning pitcher, allowing four hits while striking out eight.

A home run by Holt in the top of the first inning was the only run Hartselle scored against Curry in the opening round tournament game. Faulk and Hope Cain each had a single.
