Hartselle clinches No. 2 seed in Hoover tourney

Hartselle’s baseball team defeated Briarwood 7-3 Wednesday afternoon to earn the No. 2 seed in the Hoover Buccaneer Classic tournament, which begins tomorrow.

Hartselle finished 4-0 in pool play and will play at noon Thursday in the tournament. If they win, they will play in the finals at 2:30 p.m.

Chris Brown led the way in the final game of pool play with a 2-for-2 effort, including three RBIs and a double. Aaron Lamb was 2-for-4 with an RBI.

AJ Owens, Deacon Aldridge and Brett Blackwood also had hits. Tyler Phillips and Easton Chenault scored runs off of walks.

Levi Tapscott pitched four scoreless innings to get the win, allowing just one hit and two walks with a strikeout. Starter Brady Wallace allowed three earned runs on three hits and five walks with two strikeouts.

Hartselle 10, Mars Hill 0

Hartselle had just six hits and three walks, but the Mars Hill pitching staff hit four Hartselle batters with pitches.

The Tigers recorded RBIs on all 10 runs.

Deacon Aldridge was 2-for-3 on the afternoon, scoring one time. Aaron Lamb had a hit, a run and an RBI. Blake Slayton drove in two runs and scored twice despite not getting a hit.

AJ Owens was also 1-for-2 with three RBIs and a run.Daniel Conley also went 1-for-1 with three RBIs.

Griffen Steelman allowed only one hit and one walk in five scoreless innings.
