Twenty-five German exchange students are got a good look at what the lifestyle of southern families is all about as guests of Hartselle High School students and their families.

Arriving on March 14, they lived in the homes of their hosts, attended classes with them, attended the school’s annual Junior-Senior Prom and basked in the sun and sand of Alabama’s beaches.

Their itinerary also included a visit to the U.S. Space & Rocket Center in Huntsville, a tour of the Bryant-Denny Stadium and Museum of National History in Tuscaloosa and a visit to Atlanta, where they toured CNN Studios and the World of Coca-Cola.

“They were awed by the size and amenities of Bryant-Denny and all that’s involved in the production of a bottle of Coca-Cola but even more excited and thrilled about the prom and beach trip,” said Houston Blackwood who served with Tanya Lybarger as HHS faculty hosts.

“The 11 girls were especially thrilled about being able to attend the prom with their escorts,” Blackwood explained. “They were not able to bring formal dresses but that didn’t matter. The Something Blue Too shop invited them to come in and choose a gown of their choice and have it fitted at no cost.”

Also, a three-day stay at Fort Morgan was made possible by Mike and Julie Murphy. They donated three beach houses for the group’s use.

The exchange students returned to Hartselle on Tuesday, March 26, and spent five days with their host families, including Easter Sunday. They returned home from Huntsville on April 1.

“This group of exchange students was intelligent, jovial, fun-loving and well behaved,” Blackwood said. “Rarely have we heard a complaint from anyone.”

The students are juniors at Robert Koch School in Clausthel Zellerfeld, Germany. They will serve as hosts to their 25 Hartselle High School hosts June 2-16.
