BOE interviews CSFO candidates

The Hartselle Board of Education is not likely to name its chief school financial officer at its regular meeting on April 15, according to board president Dr. James Joy.

“I think we’re going to need more time,” Joy said after the interviews Thursday. “I think we may call a special meeting later to select the CSFO.”

The board interviewed the following candidates:

  • John Higginbotham of Hartselle, currently employed with Huntsville Hospital as a decision support specialist/analyst
  • Tiffany Mason of Falkville currently employed with the Alabama Department of Examiners of Public Accounts.
  • Ina Smith of Huntsville, staff accountant at Calhoun Community College.
  • Larry Vance of Florence, currently the CSFO for Lauderdale County Schools.

Daniel Theis of Daphne, who is currently the manager of K-12 accounting implementation division with CSI-McAleer Software Solutions, did not interview with the board.

Board member Monty Vest recommended that each member do their own research on the candidates before they make a decision.

School Superintendent Dr. Mike Reed agreed.

“I think everyone should do their due diligence on each candidate and then get back together to compare notes at a later date,” Reed said.

Joy didn’t have a target date of when the CSFO would be hired. Former CSFO Sarita Tapscott resigned earlier this year to take a higher-paying job with Alabaster City Schools.

Until that point, Reed suggested that the board continue to extend the contract of Lisa McMurray, who was hired as financial consultant through April 30 to fill the role of chief school financial officer, until May 31.

Ken Roberts, who is conducting the CSFO search for the school board, said the school system could have additional help as well.

“There are some additional resources available to you, which could be at no cost,” Roberts said.
