BOE posts superintendent job description

Hartselle City Schools has officially posted its job description of for its new school superintendent today.

Sandra Sims-deGraffenried of BWP and Associates presented the job description to the Hartselle Board of Education Thursday afternoon. She said she planned to post the job this morning.

“The job description came from the 54 face-to-face interviews, the community group responses and from the online survey,” Sims-deGraffenried said. “In all, you had about 210 responses.”

Dr Jim Jeffers, who is assisting Sims-deGraffenried, said most of the language of the job description came directly from the public input.

“What we heard during the interviews and the public input meetings is in this job description,” Jeffers said. “While the exact words might not be there, the meat and potatoes of what you said is in here.”

Many of the top responses in the online survey were heavily reflected in the job description. For example, leadership and communication skills were the top two skills recommended for a school superintendent. They were also the first two characteristics listed in the job description.

School board member Randy Sparkman commended Sims-deGraffenried and Jeffers for their work on the job description.

“I see many of the things we talked about in this description,” Sparkman said. “It is very well done.”

Sims-deGraffenried said the next milestone in the timeline is deadline for statements of interests on May 15.

Board members will try to schedule interviews beginning May 28 and ending June 6. Sims-deGraffenreid recommended taking one day to interview each candidate. This would include taking tours of the school and the community.

Between 4 and 5:15 p.m., board members will allow the community to meet the superintendent candidates. The formal interview would begin around 6 p.m. each day.

The board could then be ready to make an select a finalist, with whom the board would then be able to negotiate a contract.

A new superintendent would then start between July 1 and 15.
