Former Mayor dies in Gulf Shores

Former Hartselle mayor Don Brown, 74, died Fri., April 19, in Gulf Shores.

Brown remained a resident of Hartselle even though he spent several months each year in Gulf Shores. He served as Hartselle’s first full-time mayor from 1980 to 1984. He was a native of Dothan but spent most of his adult life in Hartselle.

Brown attended Huntington College and moved to Hartselle after marrying Martha Lynn Roberts. Before his election as mayor, Brown worked for his father-in-law, E.R. Roberts, at a general merchandise store in downtown Hartselle. He also served on the city’s park and recreation board. After his term as mayor, Brown operated a furniture refinishing shop in Hartselle until he retired in 2002.

He is survived by his wife, Martha Lynn Roberts Brown; three children, Lynn Brown Garrison, Doug Brown and Beth Brown Emerson; five grandchildren, Jordan Garrison, Jacob Garrison, Megan Emerson, Ford Brown and Camille Brown; and two brothers, O.C. Brown and Hal Brown.

No services had been announced as of Monday.
