Today

Hartselle Board of Zoning Adjustment will meet June 3 at 5 p.m. in the City Hall auditorium. Items on the agenda include: Home Occupation – Prior – 306 Oak Lane, SE and Frontage Variance – Woodard – Byrd Road, SE.

Hartselle Youth Football and Cheerleading registration will be at Sparkman Civic Center on June 3, 10 and 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. Registration fees are $60 for ages 5-6 and $80 for ages 7-12.

June 4

Hartselle Planning Commission will meet June 4 at 8 a.m. at the City Hall auditorium. The agenda includes CBD Ordinance Amendment – Commission Discussion.

The Falkville Town Council meets on the first Tuesday of every month at 6 p.m.

Splash Pad parties will be every Tuesday in June from 1 to 3 p.m. at the John Mark Stallings Special Needs Accessible Playground splash pad for ages 12 and under. The event is free. Refreshments are served after each party to children only.

Hartselle’s fall AYSO soccer registration will be June 4, 11 and 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. and June 22 from 9 a.m. to noon. Registration will be held at the soccer fields on Groover Road.

The Hartselle Board of Education’s interview with superintendent candidate Dr. Eddie Ingram has been cancelled for June 4.

June 5-6

The Hartselle High School Softball Camp will be held at the Grady and Margie Long Park June 5 and 6 from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. both days. The camp is for ages 5-13. Learn fundamental individual skills. Campers should bring their gloves, bats, helmets, cleats and tennis shoes. Participants will receive T-shirts. Refreshments will be provided. Camp cost is $50 and family discounts are available. June 6

The Hartselle CBD Design Review Board will meet June 6 at 5 p.m.

The Hartselle Board of Education will have a meet-and-greet with superintendent candidate Dr. Sandra Spivey on June 6 from 4:15 to 5:30 p.m. at the Hartselle Fine Arts Center. The public interview session will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the BOE central office.

Girl Scouts will sponsor Morgan County Day Camp Luau June 6 and 7 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Sparkman Park. For more information, contact Brantley Kirk at 800-410-8338, ext. 1233.

College Street Players will conduct auditions for Disney’s “The AristoCats Kids” on Thur., June 6, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. and Sat., June 8, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Casting will be for students in grades K-8 and directed by Kathy Manning and Jenny Faulk.This is a musical and will be cast on vocal strengths as well as character description and stage presence. Please be prepared to sing a brief piece for two minutes or less. Cast lists will be posted by Sun., June 9, and a mandatory cast meeting will be Mon., June 10. Mature Lifestyle of Decatur Morgan Hospital will have a covered dish lunch at the former Hartselle Medical Center cafeteria on Fri., June 7, at 11:30 a.m. Come and visit with friends and catch up on the latest healthcare news. Also plan to come early, the Huntsville Health System Mobile Medical Unit will be on site from 9 a.m. to noon, to do blood pressures and check your blood sugar. The Decatur Women’s Connection will hold its monthly luncheon Fri., June 7, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Decatur Country Club. The featured speaker will be John Allison, Morgan County Archivist, who will tell about the Morgan County Archives and Genealogical Society, The inspirational speaker is Marilyn Sitton from Norcross, Ga. June 8

Falkville High School Quarterback Club will conduct its inaugural Summer Slam 2013 fundraiser on Sat., June 8, at the South Park Sports Complex at 1101 Culver Road in Falkville. The day-long event begins at 10 a.m. with fun, food and a variety of activities including a one-pitch softball tourney, golf chip shot, three-on-three basketball tourney, barbecue cook-off, kids’ inflatables, concessions, a classic car show. 5 to 9 p.m., and live music by Michael Dean and Double Shot. DJ Scott Reed will host the music. Entry fee is $5 wristband with free parking (kids eight and under free). A large bonfire will close the event after dark. Tunsel Road Baptist Church will have vacation Bible school on June 8 from at 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theme is “Jungle Jaunt” and children ages 3 through sixth grade are welcome.

SonRise Baptist Church, located at 1410 Thompson Road, Hartselle, is having a Community Outreach supper, Sat., June 8, at 5:30 p.m., free to the public.

June 9

June 10

The 2013 Hartselle High School summer baseball camp will be June 10-11 for ages 10 and under and June 12-13 for ages 11 and up. Both camps will be at Sparkman Park and will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. daily. Campers should furnish glove and tennis shoes. Hats are optional. HHS coaches and players will be assisting head coach William Booth with the camp. Registration fee is $60. Make checks payable to Hartselle Baseball Camp. Mellonie Chappell will sponsor a tumbling clinic for children ages 5-10 June 10 to 12 from 9 to 11 a.m. Registration fee is $35 and is due June 7.

June 12

A youth healthy living, fitness and cooking class will be held at the Decatur Aquadome on June 12 from 9 a.m. to noon, with lunch provided. Learn about burning calories and making healthy and delicious meals. Register by June 10 with the Morgan County Extension Office at 256-773-2549.

June 13

Youth will get to experience a day in the life of a real firefighter by trying on uniforms, exploring trucks and participating in other activities during the City of Hartselle’s Youth Fire Academy June 13 from 9 to 11 a.m. The Hartselle Fire Department will be in Sparkman Park to share information with children ages 6-12. Only those that register by June 7 will receive a T-shirt. The event is free. Kids, be prepared to get wet.

This summer’s theme is “All 80’s, All Summer.” The movies will begin at dusk at Pavilion 4. On June 13, “Honey, I Shrunk the Kids” will be shown. June 14

Hartselle Parks and Recreation is sponsoring a Daddy-Daughter Date Night June 14 from 7 to 9 p.m., just in time for Father’s Day. Daughters, bring dear old Dad out for a night of dinner and dancing and many other wonderful things we have planned for the evening. Photos will be available for $5 each. A $10 per person fee is due by June 7 to reserve your place.

Swamp Johns will be at Roundtop Community Church, 133 Roundtop Rd., Falkville, Fri., June 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. For a cost of $10, you can choose between fish, shrimp, chicken or a combo plate.

June 15

Liberty Baptist Church, 1206 Lane Rd., NW, Hartselle, is having vacation Bible school, Sat., June 15, from 9 to noon.

June 16

Beginning June 16, Salem United Methodist Church in Hartselle will change its Sunday morning worship service time from 11 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Sunday school will also change from 10 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Journey Church, located at 3683 Eva Road in Eva, welcomes Bishop John D. Ritcheson for Revival, June 16 at 10 a.m. and June 17 through 21 at 6:30 p.m. nightly.

June 17

The Hartselle Board of Education will meet Mon., June 17, at 6 p.m. at the central office.

Karate Clinic by Donnie Chappell, head instructor at Chappell’s Karate will be June 17-20, at 9 a.m., for ages 3 and up. Mr. Chappell will be teaching life skills in a Christian environment. Ages 3-5 will attend for one hour and ages 6 and above will attend for two hours. The fee is $30 and $40 respectively, and includes a T-shirt. Please register and pay no later than June 14.

Danny Light, USPTR tennis pro will be teaching a clinic for ages 6-16 June 17-20 at Burningtree Country Club. Cost is $40 per student. For more information, call Sparkman Civic Center at 256-773-2581.

June 18

Cast iron cooking and outside grilling class for students, Tues., June 18, from 10 a.m. -12 p.m for $5 at Sparkman Park Pavilion. Register by June 12, with the Morgan Co. Extension Office at 256-773-2549.

June 19

The Morgan County Farmers Federation will have its annual cooking, sewing and quilting contest June 19 at 1 p.m. at Cotaco School Library. Individuals must be members of the Alabama Farmers Federation. For information, call Sue Nelson at 256-565-7437 or e-mail suewnelson@bellsouth.net.

The Morgan County Extension Office is offering a free dog obedience workshop at Sparkman Park in Hartselle Wed., June 19, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Register by June 12 and bring only one dog with collar, leash and vaccine records. For more information, call 256-773-2549.

June 20

Hartselle’s finest will be at Sparkman Civic Center on June 20 from 1 to 3 p.m. for the Hartselle Police Department’s Youth Police Academy. This will give children an idea of what goes on behind the scenes. The police officers invite children ages 6-12 to look inside a patrol car and learn about other exciting police procedures. This event is free but please register by June 14. Those that register after the cut-off date will not receive an event T-shirt.

The Morgan County Soil and Water Conservation District is having a Wetland Explorers program June 20 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. for children from second to sixth grade. Cost is $15 and includes lunch and a T-shirt. Children will learn about survival, water, soil and wildlife. Explorers will also be making their own dirt shirt. June 22

Falkville Lions Club will sponsor its annual Gold Tournament at Quail Creek Golf Resort on June 22. The fee for the four-man scramble event is $200 per team or $50 per hole sponsor. The event is the club’s largest fundraiser. Proceeds from the 2012 event made it possible to provide food and gifts for 49 needy families at the club’s annual Christmas project. June 24

The Hartselle City Council will meet for a work session Mon., June 10, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall auditorium.

Boys ages 10 to 14 will have an opportunity to participate in Hartselle Park and Recreation’s Boys 2 Men. This class will teach basic automotive, grooming, tool information, lawn care, camping basics, grilling and more. This class is June 24-28 from 9 to 11 a.m. Upon completion of the course, each participant will receive a one-day pool pass to the Hartselle Aquatic Center. The fee is $10 per person. Scholarships are available for those unable to pay. Register no later than June 21.

Morgan County 4-H will have a youth omelet workshop Mon., June 24, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Sparkman Civic Center. Class is $3. Learn how to make an omelet in a zipper baggie. Register by June 19.

June 25

The Hartselle City Council will meet for a regular meeting Tues., June 25, at 7 p.m. in the City Hall auditorium.

July 1

Co-ed and men’s softball league registration will begin July 1 through Aug. 2 with games beginning Aug. 12. The team registration is $425. Call Sparkman Civic Center at for more details.

July 4

The Spirit of America Festival will be Thur., July 4, beginning at 4 p.m. at Point Mallard Park in Decatur. Activities include a children’s bike parade, live stage entertainment, a children’s area, Boy Scout celebration arena, Spirit of America awards ceremony, Miss Point Mallard Pageant and of course the Spirit of America fireworks display, at 10 p.m.

July 8

July 9

The Morgan County Extension Office is hosting a Babysitting 101 class for youth on Tues., July 9, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Sparkman Civic Center. Learn the basics of babysitting, diaper changing, feeding, games to play with children and what to do in an emergency. This is not a Red Cross certification class and there is no fee. July 11

The CBD Design Review Board July meeting, if needed, will be scheduled for July 11 at 5 p.m. due to the July 4 holiday. Submittals will be due by June 27.

Sparkman Civic Center will host a night of fun and games for kids 5-12 years old during its FUN-tastic Friday on July 12 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Parents can plan a fun evening out and drop the kids off for a $10 fee. Register by July 8 to reserve your space. Snacks will be provided.

Body Quest will be Mon., July 12, through Thur., July 18, from 10 a.m. to noon at Sparkman Civic Center. Body Quest is a four-day workshop with the goal to increase fruit and vegetable consumption, make physical activity jazzy, enhance sleep, hygiene and encourage family engagement, all with the help of an Apple iPad. Register by Mon., July 5.

July 18

Hartselle Parks and Recreation is hosting Grandpa’s Got Talent July 18 at 10 a.m. at Sparkman Civic Center. We are looking for singers, storytellers, dancers, yodelers, kazoo players and any other talented guys with grandchildren. Prizes will be given and its free to sign up. Register at your local senior center or at Sparkman Civic Center by July 15.

July 19

Hartselle Parks and Recreation will have its annual princess party at Sparkman Civic Center on July 19 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for ages 5 to 8. We will play games, make tiaras, play make-up and have “tea” at noon. Wear your best gaudy princess attire. Please register at the Sparkman Civic Center and pay the $10 fee, no later than July 15.

July 20

Hartselle Parksand Recreation will sponsor its annual luau at Hartselle Aquatic Center July 20 from 8 -10 p.m. There will be special music, tropical decorations, exciting games and Hawaiian leis for everyone. Cost is $5. Season pool passes will not be honored during the luau.

July 24

Morgan County 4-H is hosting a cake-decorating workshop will be at the Morgan County Extension Office on Wed., July 24, from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Registration is $6 fee. Students will learn basic cake decorating and go home with a beautiful cake that you decorated. Registration deadline is Tues., July 9.

July 29

The annual Hartselle AYSO clinic will be held July 29 through Aug. 2. For more information, call Sparkman Civic Center at 256-773-2581.

Aug. 8

This summer’s theme is “All 80’s, All Summer.” The movies will begin at dusk at Pavilion 4. The series finale will be Oct. 3 with “Ghostbusters.” This movie night will be in conjunction with Hartselle Parks and Recreation Trunk-or-Treat. More information about Trunk-or-Treat will be available this fall.
