A retirement and a promotion left Morgan County School board seeking principals for two schools following a regular board meeting Thursday night.

A principal’s vacancy was created at Danville High School when the board accepted the resignation of veteran school administrator Gilmer Ellis.

The transfer of Dr. Anne Knowlton from principal at Priceville Elementary School to director of programs at the Central Office left another vacancy.

Ellis will vacate his position in favor of retirement on June 30 and Knowlton will assume her new position on June 17.

“We lost a good one,” Hopkins said of Ellis’s decision to retire after 45 years. “We begged him not to go.”

“He has been instrumental in getting so many good things done at Danville,” said Danville board representative Carolyn Wallace. He’s done a supper job. The students loved him and he loved them back. “

“Dr. Knowlton was an easy pick,” Hopkins said. “She will continue to be a tremendous asset to our school system.”

She follows Vicki Smith who retired.

Hopkins said he would post the principal vacancies the next day and keep them open for two weeks.

The board could consider filling them at its next regular meeting in July.

Cherie Humphries was appointed interim principal at Priceville Elementary until the position is filled.

The salary range for principal positions in the Morgan County School District ranges from $74,286 to $89,104 annually, depending on education and years of service.

Other personnel items recommended by the superintendent and approved by the board are listed as follows:

•Approved correction to the Morgan County Schools Central Office support staff, removing Elizabeth Anders form the listing. She was incorrectly included on the listing.

•Approved a contract for services with Sheryl Brock to provide tutoring services on an hourly basis, as needed, effective June 1, 2013 through Sept. 30, 2013.

•Approved a contract for services with Cheryl Bumpus to provide tutoring services on an hourly basis, as needed, effective June 1, 2013 through Sept. 30, 2013.

•Approved a catastrophic leave request from Cynthia Parker, a classroom aide at Cotaco School, effective Mar. 20, 2013, through Apr. 29, 2013.

•Accepted the resignation of Karen Wilemon as varsity girl’s volleyball coach at Falkville High School, effective May 6, 2013.

•Accepted the resignation of Brad Stapler as assistant football coach and head boy’s and girl’s golf coach at Brewer High School.

Accepted the resignation of Lana McCay as cheerleading sponsor at Cotaco School, effective at the end of the 2012 -2013 school year.

•Accepted the resignation of Brad Drummond as football coach at Eva School, effective at the end of the season.

•Accepted the resignation of Ginger Butler as girl’s volleyball coach at Eva School, effective Feb. 12, 2013.

•Approved a contract for services with the following Morgan County Schools employees for the 2013 summer school and AHSGE remediation:

Cathy Thompson, Angie Tomlin, Hank Little, Josh Sawyer and Kelley Hopkins, all summer school teachers; Julie Thompson, remediation; Marsha Smith, Donald Weeks, Cathy Thompson, Chad Kelsoe, Julia Randolph, Carole Sharpe. Lisa Lang and Shane Hopkins, proctor or administer the AHSGE; and Teleah Alexander, proctor the AHSGE.

•Approved a nurse contract with Anita Fisher to work in the extended year program at Sparkman School for 12 days, June 11-13, June 18-20, July 9-11 and July 16-18, 2013, effective June 1, 2013.

•Approved a teacher contract with Tammy Evans to work in the extended year program at Sparkman School for of 12 days, June 11-13, June 18-20, July 9-11 and July 16-18, 2013, effective June 11, 2013.

•Approved a catastrophic leave of absence for Tina Marie Prince, custodian at Union Hill School, effective June 5, 2013, through July 31, 2013.

•Accepted the resignation of Ashley McCulloch as girl’s basketball coach at Lacey’s Spring School, effective May 8, 2013.

•Approved a catastrophic leave request for Maebec Halbrooks, a teacher at West Morgan Elementary School, effective May 23, 2013, through Nov. 1, 2013.

•Approved a family medical leave of absence for Renate Galyean, a bus driver at Sparkman School, effective May 14, 2013, through Aug. 14, 2013.

•Approved Brandon Jarrett as a career tech instructor in welding at Brewer High School, effective Aug. 9, 2013. He is replacing Stephen Gillies who resigned.

•Approved a family medical leave for Robin Ferrell, a custodian at Brewer High School, effective July 7, 2013, through Aug. 2, 2013,

•Approved Morgan County Schools salary schedule, effective July 1, 2013.

•Approved a catastrophic leave for Robin Ferrell, effective May 13, 2013, through June 28, 2013.

•Approved a contract for services with Lisa Lang to provide instruction for two students during the 2012-2013 summer months.

• Approved three-year principal employment contracts, effective July 1, 2013, through June 30, 2016, with Cliff Booth, Earl Leonard, Jeremy Childers, and Bruce Sparkman.

•Approved the transfer of Mark Edwards from assistant principal to a certified teacher of general science at Brewer High School, effective Aug. 8, 2013. This is a new position.

•Approved the reemployment of Nicole Lowery as a 10-month custodian at Lacey’s Spring School, effective Aug. 2, 2013.

•Approved the transfer of Heather Mahan from fourth grade teacher to guidance counselor at Lacey’s Spring School, effective Aug. 9, 2013.

•Approved the transfer of Terry Speegle from custodian at Brewer High School to head custodian at Lacey’s Spring School, effective June 17, 2013. He is replacing Barbara Lang who resigned.

•Approved the transfer of Crystal Williams from second grade teacher at Danville-Neel Elementary School to certified teacher at Falkville High School, effective Aug. 9, 2013. She is replacing Heather Vest who transferred.

•Approved Cherie Humphries as interim principal at Priceville Elementary School, effective June 17, 2013.

• Approved Johnny Harbison as a 10-month assistant principal at Brewer High School, effective July 26, 2013. He is replacing Mark Edwards who transferred.
