PHS project moves into site prep phase

Two school construction projects totaling more than $2.4 million were approved by the Morgan County Board of Education at its regular monthly meeting Thursday night.

A low bid of $1,314. 250 was accepted from Woodward Construction and Design of Hartselle to do the mass grading, drainage and sanitary sewer work for the new Priceville High School.

The board also approved a $1.2 million budget to construct a six-classroom addition at West Morgan Elementary School.

Woodward’s bid came in $47,650 lower than a second low bid of $1,361,900, submitted by Baggette Construction of Decatur. Five other bids were received with the high being $2,100, 278.

Kevin Gunnison, senior construction manager for Volkert Inc. said Woodward would mobilize its equipment on site within the next 10 days and begin work within four to five weeks.

The project is subject to completion within 90 days from the starting date.

Bob Gray, a representative of Goodwin, Mills & Cawood Architects, said drawings for the classroom addition should be ready to put out for bids in July and the addition should be completed in time for the 2014-2015 school year.

Superintendent Bill Hopkins Jr. said three temporary classrooms have been set up on campus and will be used until the new classroom is ready for occupancy.

Funding for the project will come from a $26.5 million bond issue, which was obtained earlier this year for the new Priceville High School.

Other actions taken by the board are listed as follows:
