Mountain Brook High School Principal Vic Wilson has been selected to lead Hartselle City Schools.

The Hartselle Board of Education unanimously voted to offer the position to Wilson during its regular board meeting Monday night.

Board President Dr. James Joy said all three candidates were strong, but he felt like Wilson was the best fit for Hartselle.

“Coming from a smaller town similar to Hartselle made him a good fit for our area,” Joy said. “He expressed a lot of the same values of the people of Hartselle. He values educational opportunities for our students. He values opportunities with church. He just was the best fit for us.”

Joy, board member Monty Vest and the board attorney James “Spud” Seale will meet this week with Wilson to finalize details of the contract. The posted salary range for the position is $120,000 to $140,000.

Vest said she contacted him Monday to inform him of the board’s decision, but no meeting time was set up as of Tuesday morning. She said she feels Wilson is ready to start.

“He’s eager to get started,” Vest said. “We hope he will be in place by early July.

“It all goes back to input we had from the questionnaires from the faculty and the community. It validated what we thought the people of Hartselle felt like we needed at this time. I feel that Dr. Wilson will meet what we needed.”

Board member Randy Sparkman said he was intrigued by Wilson’s thoughts on customized education for all students.

“He said he wanted to create learning opportunities for every child and that resounded with me,” Sparkman said. “He has an emphasis on building leadership. I feel that is what our school system needs at this time. I think that is something everyone feels that we need.”

Board member Jennifer Sittason said they had an excellent pool of candidates.

“What the community was looking for was reflected in the candidates we had,” Sittason said. “We were very fortunate to have such a great pool of candidates.

“My decision was based on who was the best fit for us right now and that was Dr. Wilson.”
