Deputy Tony Vest was dispatched to Wilson Mountain Road in the Falkville area around 2:30 a.m. Deputy Vest and an assisting corrections officer met with the victim, a 31-year-old female suffering from a lip laceration, several raised knots on her head and bruises to her arms and legs.

The door to the residence was open, and deputies quickly detained Phillip Lawayne Cranor as part of the investigation. The deputy determined Cranor assaulted the female, pushing her down, punching her several times and finally putting her in a “choke hold,” cutting off her oxygen.

The female was able to escape by striking him in the head with a beer bottle. Cranor had a lump on his forehead, but no other injuries.

The female was transported to Decatur General Hospital for treatment. Cranor was charged with domestic violence by strangulation or suffocation and taken to the Morgan County Jail with a $5,000 bond.
