Community yard sale planned at Somerville

A miniature version of the “world’s longest yard sale” is in the making at Somerville.

More than 25 families have signed on with the Somerville Celebration Committee to participate in a first annual Community Yard Sale on Sat., Sept. 7.

The families have paid the Celebration Committee $10 each to have their names and addresses printed on a “yard sale map.” Copies of the map will be available at the old courthouse beginning at 5:30 a.m. on sale day, and may be picked up free of charge by anyone who desires to do some yard sale shopping on that day.

Project coordinator Harleen Reynolds reported 27 participants as of Fri., Aug. 23. The signup period continued through Mon., Aug. 26.

“We’re encouraged by the good response we’ve had and hope to make this an event that will grow and bring in people from all over the county for years to come,” a committee spokesperson said. “The selection of yard sale goods is going to be really good with this many families participating. We’re anticipating a big rush of lookers and buyers, especially during the early hours of the day.

Most of the yard sales are located within two miles of the town hall. Starting and ending times of sales is left up to each family.

Proceeds from the registration fee will be used to help restore the second floor level of the town’s historic Morgan County Courthouse.
