Priceville PD responds to accidental shooting

A phone call came into central dispatch from Decatur Fire Station 6, with the caller advising police that a person had been shot and transported to the fire station for medical help, suffering from a gunshot wound to the right side.

The victim, Derrick Alexander Hunter Couch, 20, of 2404 Penny Lane SW in Decatur, was transported to Decatur Morgan Hospital where he underwent surgery.

The shooting was accidental, Couch told police.

According to Jackson Neal Holland, the pistol was lying in his lap, after he and some friends had fired it, the weapon, and he was going to clear it of its clip when it went off. He was unsure if he had his find on the trigger when the weapon discharged.

The victim was sitting to Jackson’s left when the gun discharged. A single round struck him in his side.

Friends said they loaded Couch in a vehicle and was carrying him to Decatur Morgan Hospital when they stopped at Fire Station 6 for help.

The incident occurred near Upper River Road between Bethel Road and I-65. At the time, the victim was attending a bonfire and party.
