If you happen to see a police officer in Hartselle over the next few weeks, there’s a good chance he might not be as clean-shaven as you would expect.

That’s because about 15 officers in the Hartselle Police Department are participating in No Shave November to raise money for Crisis Services of North Alabama.

Police Chief Ron Puckett said the officers who are participating had to raise at least $50 by Nov. 1 and then will have to raise another $50 by Nov. 30.

“One of the officers approached me about the idea,” Puckett said. “I thought it was a great idea and it’s benefiting a charity that we work closely with. I ran it by the mayor and he agreed.”

Public information officer Lt. Justin Barley, who is participating in the campaign, said officer Michael Holladay suggested the idea. Barley said he’s seen a positive response from community members.

“In fact, a man heard about the project and came by here to donate $100 to the cause,” Barley said. “I think everyone has been very positive about the idea once we explained what we were doing.”

While several of his officers are growing out beards this month, Puckett said he won’t be participating.

“I guess I’m just too old school to do it now,” Puckett said. “I went on a mission trip a few years ago and all of us men decided not to shave for the entire trip, but I couldn’t do it. After a couple of days, it was bothering me. So I snuck off and shaved it off.

“But I applaud our officers for participating in this worthy cause. It’s something fun for the officers to do and it’s benefiting Crisis Services of North Alabama,” Puckett added.
