Danville sweeps WCHS in opener

Danville High School’s varsity basketball teams got off to a good start Thursday night as both collected wins in their season openers at home.

The Hawks overcame a three-point halftime deficit with a third quarter rally and went on to crave out as a 55-48 decision over Winston County.

The Lady Hawks jumped out to a 51-8 halftime lead in the girls contest and went on to pull off an 85-14 win.

“We didn’t play very well in the first half,” said boys head coach Scott Ellis. “We didn’t exercise patience in our shot selection and we weren’t very aggressive on defense. Thankfully, we got things turned around in the second half by playing with a higher level of energy and doing a better job of executing our offense.”

“We‘ve still trying to find our identity and have got a lot of stuff to work on,” he added.

“Our players gave great effort.” said girls head coach Paul Wilson. “Getting the early lead enabled us to play everybody a lot and that was good for the team. We still want to keep playing hard and getting better.”

The boys game was tied at 13-all after the first period and Wnston County led 24-21 at the half, Danville was up 39-33 after three periods.

Patrick Doherty led the Hawks in scoring with 22 points. He had 16 points at the half, including five threes. Alan Cordova followed with 11 points and Kyle Alexander collected 10 points.

Cody Henderson scored 22 points to lead Winston County. Timber Blankenship had 12 points.

Tabatha Hutto paced Danville‘s girls in scoring with 21 points. Kheala Roberts followed with 18 points, Shelia Cordova had 13 points and Gracie George had 10.

DHS 64, Decatur Her. 54

Danville’s Hawks prevailed in a tough defensive battle, 64-54, to pick up their second straight win at Decatur Heritage Christian Academy on Friday night.

The Hawks led 7-4 after one period and 24-19 at the half. The game was tied at 34-all after three periods.

Two sophomores stepped up to carry the day with three starters fouling out before the end of the game. Isaiah Moore led the way with 17 points while Alan Cordova added 16. Seniors Kyle Alexander, Patrick Doherty and Brandon McCormick each had nine points.

Jacob Crews led Decatur Heritage with 17 points. He was followed by Sawyer Holland with 14.
