A look back at Charles Elliotte Howell Jr.

The Howell family has been very prominent in Hartselle since its earliest days. Recently, one of the distinguished members of this group of leaders passed away at his home in Huntsville – Charles Elliotte Howell, Jr.

March 12, 1941 – A son, whom they have named Charles Elliotte Howell, Jr., was born to Helen and Elliotte Howell, Sr., today.

July 22, 1948 – Mrs. A. E. Jackson and her grandchildren, Helen and Charles Howell, are spending this week at a resort in the Smokey Mountains. The children’s mother, Mrs. Elliotte Howell, has joined them for the last part of their stay in the Smokies.

Oct. 8, 1956 – QB Charles Howell led MCHS to victory over the Cullman Bearcats tonight.

Sept. 11, 1958 – Charles Howell, superbly playing the quarterback position, led MCHS to a football victory over the Falkville Blue Devils tonight.

Sept. 16, 1958 – Student of the week at MCHS is Charles Howell. In his spare time he likes to hunt and fish. He says his pet peeve is people.

May 19, 1959 – After an outstanding athletic and academic career at MCHS, Charles Howell received his high school diploma tonight.

Jan. 16, 1965 – Charles Howell joined the Air National Guard. After six years’ service he was honorably discharged on Jan. 15, 1971.

June 4, 1965 – Charles Howell is now a college graduate. He received his diploma from Florence State in exercises there tonight. Charles’s degree is in biology.

Nov. 23, 1968 – Lisa Pickens and Charles Howell were united in holy matrimony today at the Rockville Presbyterian Church in Rockville, Md. today.

Oct. 16, 1971 – The distinguished name, Charles Elliotte Howell, will be carried on for at least another generation. Lisa and Charles Howell celebrated the birth of their first child, a son, Charles III, today.

July 21, 1974 – Little Lisa joined her brother, Charles III, in the Charles and Lisa Howell household today.

June 1, 1986 – Charles Howell is the newest member of the highly progressive staff of the City of Huntsville, working as a software systems analyst.

Jan. 26, 2004 – The Estes family warmly received newborn Jack into their home on this cold winter day. (Mom is the former Lee Alice Howell, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Howell.)

March 3, 2004 – Not to be outdone by his sister, Charles III and Mrs. Howell invited into their home today a daughter whom her parents have named Katherine. The elder Howells now have two fine grandchildren.

Oct. 11, 2005 – Jack Estes, now one but soon to be two, has a new playmate. A daughter was welcomed into his home today.

Nov. 20, 2006 – The distinguished name Charles Elliotte Howell will be carried on well into the 21st century if not the 22nd. Mrs. Charles Howell III gave birth to a son today. His parents plan to call him Charlie.

Feb. 28, 2008 – A third grandchild for the Charles Howells has made his appearance. Sam joined brother Charlie in the Charles III household today.

March 7, 2009 – There was mourning in the Charles Howell home today, Lisa Pickens Howell, wife of Charles for more than four decades, mother to Charles III and Lee Alice, and grandmother to Katherine, Alice, Charlie, and Sam, passed away today.

March 22, 1910 – Charles Howell now has a quartet of grandchildren. His son Charles III and Mrs. Howell welcomed a daughter, Ann Hope, to their home today, joining sister Katherine, and brother Charlie.

Nov. 3, 2013 – Charles Howell, Jr., passed away.

Nov. 7, 2013 – Graveside services for Charles Elliotte Howell Jr. were held at Oakwood Cemetery in Sheffield.

Nov. 23, 2013 – Had they both lived, Mr. and Mrs. Howell would have celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary today.
