The Hartselle Fire Department will become the newest tenant on the Hartselle Junior High School campus.
At a work session Monday, the Hartselle City Council considered approving a lease agreement with Hartselle City Schools to use one of the classrooms for training. The lease states that the city would not be required to pay rent and HCS would pay for utilities. The measure passed unanimously Tuesday.
Currently, the Hartselle Police Department is using the old IRC building to give its school resource officers offices and for training rooms.
Hartselle fire chief Steve Shelton said he is planning to use the classroom for joint training with other departments.
“Right now, we do training either around the kitchen table or use the Hartselle Utilities training room when it’s available,” Shelton said. “If you approve this, we would like to use this to do training with other departments. Right now, we just don’t have the space to do that.”
Although there may be no cost for rental, Shelton said they could have costs for doing some improvements to the classroom. He expects there to be some costs related to painting and other minor improvements.
“I think we can make those improvements within our budget and contributions,” Shelton added.
The council is also looking to amend its wrecker ordinance pertaining to complaints that are made against wrecker services. The new amendment states that all complaints must be in writing or they “shall not be given consideration.”
The council also considered declaring 81 sections of fire hose and its 1989 Ford Ranger surplus.
The police department requested a $90,000 budget adjustment to cover the COPS technology grant. Police chief Ron Puckett said the money would be reimbursed 100 percent from the Department of Justice.
It also made a budget adjustment of $10,000 to fire department vehicle maintenance for needed fire engine repairs and transferred $200 from fire department supplies to siren maintenance.
