Thirty lucky Barkley Bridge students received bikes for Christmas on Wednesday as winners in a Huffy Bike Giveaway sponsored by Academy Sports-Outdoors in Decatur.

Store manager Steve Bramlett said Academy Sports awards bikes to 15 girls and 15 boys in a school for each store’s trade area every year at Christmastime.

“The names of all the elementary schools in Morgan and Lawrence County were eligible for a random drawing to determine the winner,’ Bramlett stated. This year Barkley Bridge came out the winner. The winning school chooses how it wants to award the bikes.”

“We held a random drawings to select the winners from all the names of students in the first, second and third grades,” said school counselor Leslie Adams.

Names of winners were announced at an assembly of eligible students in the school gym. Delivering the bikes and extending congratulations to the winners were Bramlett and store employees Jim Brown and Dylan Stephenson, an alumnus of the school.

Adams said the students recently completed a unit of study on bike safety in their classrooms.

Each of the 20-inch bikes came with a biker’s helmet.
