Cub Scout Pack 92 sponsors Corporate Pinewood Derby
Hartselle’s Cub Scout Pack 92 has added a new twist to its annual Pinewood Derby by inviting corporate sponsors to build their own pinewood cars and enter them in a special derby competition.
The Corporate Pinewood Derby is open to any Morgan County business, community organization or individual that is willing to put up $100 for the opportunity to build its own pinewood car and race it against those of other corporate sponsors for fun and awards.
“We came up with the idea because we needed a way to raise money for the purchase of a new pinewood derby track,” said Pack master Mark Haskins. “The track we have now is old, under-size for our needs and doesn’t perform well. The one we’re hoping to buy has four racing lanes and is all-aluminum.”
Haskins said den leaders are now contacting businesses and organizations for sponsorships.
Race Day is Sat., Feb. 8, at the Hartselle High School Gymnasium. Car check-in begins at 8 a.m. and races will be conducted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Corporate Derby will come at the end of the day.
Haskins said the general pubic is invited to come watch the races. There is no admission charge.
Haskins said he expects entries from all 45 Cub Scouts in Pack 92. They range in age from first through fifth grade and new members are always welcome.
“It would be great if we could have a corporate-sponsored car for every Scout-sponsored car in the derby,” Haskins said.
Awards will be given to division winners and the top three fastest cars overall. Certificates will be awarded for the Best Overall Company Image, Most Unique Design, Most Realistic Design, Ugliest Car, Best Sports Themed Car and Best Non-car car design.
