Hartselle goes 2-1 in final day of tournament

Brett Blackwood hit three-run home run along with a game-ending RBI double to lead the Tigers against the 6A Jaguars.

Malcolm also was 2-for-4 with an RBI, a double and a run scored while Tanner Oakes was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Collins Hanners, Daniel Conley, Jorden Robinson, Dustin Stephenson and Hayden Bradford each had hits.

Tate Mathis and Levi Tapscott combined for a no-hitter and 10 strikeouts in spite of four Tiger errors. Mathis had seven of those strikeouts and earned the win.

Hartselle 12, Vestavia Hills 3

Blackwood finished 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored and an RBI in Hartselle’s 12-3 win over Vestavia Hills.

Conley also had two hits, two RBIs and one run scored. Oakes, Robinson and Malcolm also had hits for the Tigers. Oakes drew four walks in the game, scoring twice with an RBI.

Jake Nelson went the distance, allowing three unearned runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts and one walk.

Hoover 12, Hartselle 9

The Tigers tried to rally from a 12-0 deficit but came up short against the Bucs.

Curtis Russell led the charge for Hartselle, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Stephenson and Casen Wallace each had two hits and one RBI in the game while Blackwood, Oakes, Conley, Robinson and Malcolm added hits.

Brady Wallace took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Jake Shelton allowed just one hit in the final two and two-thirds innings, giving the Tigers a chance to rally.

Facing the mercy rule in the fifth inning down 12-0, Hartselle scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to stay alive. Blackwood had a two-run double in the inning.

The Tigers added two more runs in each of the sixth and seventh inning and brought the game-tying run to the plate, but the final batter struck out to end the game.
