George Crawford

Funeral for George Crawford, 71, of Somerville will be Sat., March 8, at noon at New Canaan Baptist Church with the Rev. Shane Wheeler and Bro. Robert Cruise officiating and Peck Funeral Home directing.

Burial will be in New Canaan Cemetery. Visitation will be Sat., March 8, from 10 a.m. to noon at the church.

Mr. Crawford died Thur., March 6, 2014, at his residence. He was born Feb. 8, 1943, in Marshall County to Edward Crawford and Zenobia Clark Crawford. He was a former employee of the Morgan County School System for Brewer High School and the central office. He was also an owner /operator of Morgan City Barber Shop, an owner/ operator of A-1 Truck Stop and Garage, an owner/operator of Crawford’s garage, and adjunct Instructor for Alabama State Fire College. He helped create Brindlee Mountain Volunteer Fire Department, where he was Fire Chief for 20 Years and he created East Morgan Garbage Service. He was a deacon of New Canaan Baptist Church, and was a Forest Fire Warden. He also served as the chairman of East Morgan County Industrial Development Board. He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Margie Abercrombie Crawford of Somerville; son, Clay Crawford (Phyllis) of Somerville; five brothers, Clark Crawford of Huntsville, Billy Crawford, David Crawford and Clyde Crawford, all of Lacey’s Spring and Thomas Crawford of Hartselle; two sisters, Christene Crawford of Lacey’s Spring and Mary Walker of Union Grove; grandchildren, Hannah Crawford and Andrea Benson (Cole); great-grandchild, Eli Benson.

Pallbearers will be nephews.

In lieu of flowers, family requests that memorial donations be made to New Canaan Baptist Church at 2204 Union Hill Road, Somerville, AL 35670.
