Cheers went up at Danville High School on April 2 as school board members and school faculty members gathered for the groundbreaking of a long-awaited office addition.

Leading the cheers was Danville district board member Carolyn Wallace who has rattled her saber in support of the project for nearly 20 years.

“When the high school was built in 1994 we didn’t have enough money to keep the office suite in the project,” Wallace explained, “So we elected to trade office space for classrooms.
“I’m excited and proud the school is finally getting its offices and a front entrance,” she added.  “It would’ve broken my heart to leave the school board at the end of this year and not seen the completion of the school building.”

This is something that will make the people Danville proud for many years to come,” she pointed out. “I want to thank our superintendent and fellow school board members for making this possible.”

“This is something the Danville community has wanted and needed and I’m proud to see the project moving forward,” said Superintendent Bill Hopkins Jr. “This addition not only will make the high school look better but will add a much needed safety feature. The offices are now located at the center of the school and there’s no cost-effective way to identify visitors before they enter the school building.

Kevin Gunnison, construction manager for Volkert Inc., said the building is on schedule to be ready for occupancy next July.

“The concrete pad was put down when the main building was constructed,” he pointed out. “This saved time and lowered the cost of the project.”
