Morgan BOE supports Falkville High upgrade

Architectural plans for an estimated $2.5 million upgrade of Falkville High School received a thumbs up from the Morgan County School Board at a work session on Thursday.

Walter McKee of McKee & Associates, a Montgomery-based architectural firm, reviewed a proposed layout for the renovation project with board members. It encompasses the addition of six new classrooms, administrative offices and two new restrooms and a visitors locker room at the football field.

“The school building additions are designed to fit the existing property,” said McKee.  “We want the façade of the building to look a lot like it did before changes were made.”

“The field house upgrade is a summer project,” said construction manager Kevin Gunnison of Volkert Inc. “It will be completed before next football season.”

Gunnison said plans for the school renovation have been submitted to the Alabama Building Commission and are expected to be put out for bids in August.

“We’re going to gut out the old classrooms and offices and completely renovate them,” said Superintendent Bill Hopkins, Jr. “This is not a paint-=up, fix-up job.

Falkville High Principal Glenn Lang said he welcomes the new facilities and looks forward to putting them to good use.

“Plans call for additional phases of construction when funding is available,” he said. “This will bring all classrooms under one roof and make the school safer for our students.”

Falkville High was constructed in the 1930s and is the school system’s oldest high school.
