DECATUR – Hartselle’s softball team was pushed to the brink by West Morgan before the Lady Tigers stepped up to defeat the Lady Rebels 6-0 in the Morgan County Championship Saturday night at Wilson-Morgan Park.

Head coach Christy Ferguson said she liked the way her team responded in an “if necessary” game.

“We needed this today,” Ferguson said. “We needed to see some good pitching and we got it against West Morgan in the finals. You’re going to get in these types of games in the postseason and it’s important that we responded the way we did.”

Taylor Wascavage, who hit a solo home run in the final game, said they were flat in the first championship game, which West Morgan won 4-1.

“We didn’t like the way we played,” she said. “We just stepped up in the final game.”

After scoring three runs in the first two innings, Hannah Jenkins effectively sealed the game with a two-run homer in the third inning.

Jada Hayes allowed just one hit and one walk with 11 strikeouts to record the shutout.

In the first game, Sydnee Wiley scored the only run for Hartselle on Wascavage’s RBI single.

Hope Cain and Wascavage each had two hits while Sarah Ellen Battles added another.

Hayes took the loss and Cain had five strikeouts in relief.

The Lady Rebels scored three of their four runs on two home runs.

However, Hartselle turned it around in the second game.

“It was a complete 360 degrees from the first game,” Ferguson said.

Hartselle 2, West Morgan 1

Sydnee Wiley drove in both runs on two hits to lift Hartselle to the win.

Madeline Sittason and Sarah Ellen Battles scored the runs. Jada Hayes had two hits.

Hope Cain struck out seven to earn the win.

Danville 7, Falkville 3

Danville struck for five runs in the fourth inning to take down Falkville.

Kellee Stiles hit a double and drove in two runs during the rally. Sloan Lindsey also drove in one and scored another on a 2-for-4 effort.

Lara Fagan was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Hannah-Grace Sherill had a single and scored once.

Callie Ryan drove in two runs despite not getting a hit.

Savannah Bolton got the win by pitching four scoreless innings with two strikeouts. Both runs allowed by Danville starter Morgan Weatherwax were unearned.

Alexis Casteel took the loss, striking out two in the effort. She tried to help her own cause with a double, single, RBI and one run scored.

Callie Garner also struck out one. She also had a hit at the plate.

Makenzie Smith was also 2-for-3 with two runs scored.

Brewer 3, Danville 0

Wilson only allowed three hits and one walk in a shutout of Danville Saturday afternoon.

Ledbetter hit a double and drove in two runs in the first inning to lead the way.

She later scored on McMinemon’s sacrifice fly ball.

Savannah Bolton struck out seven in a losing effort.

Sloan Lindsey, Hannah-Grace Sherill and Kristen Dobbins had the hits for Danville.

Hartselle 6, Falkville 0

Ashley Boggs went 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead Hartselle.

Boggs and Sarah Ellen Battles had doubles in the game. Taylor Wascavage, Jada Hayes and Sarah Ellen Battles drove in runs. Wascavage also scored twice.

Jada Hayes allowed two hits and struck out five to get the win.

Alexis Casteel took the loss for Falkville. She and relief pitcher Callie Garner each struck out two.

The only Blue Devil hits came from Paige Garner, Emoni Smith and Kaitlynn McMurry.

Falkville 7, Decatur Heritage 0

Callie Garner led the way with a 3-for-4 effort. Emoni Smith also drove in two runs on a triple.

Makenzie Smith’s two hits included a solo home run. Alexis Casteel and Sky Engle went 2-for-3 at the plate.

Alexis Casteel scattered three hits with two strikeouts.

Priceville 6, Decatur 3

Jenna Blankenship went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and one run to lead Priceville.

McKenzie Parker, Alexandria Shields, Alison Varner, Heather Owens and Madison Beddingfield collected hits.

Beddingfield got the win and Kylie Miller earned the save.

Hartselle 4, Austin 3

Hannah Jenkins drove in Jada Hayes with a single in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift Hartselle to the win.

After Austin took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning, Hartselle responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Hayes was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score Sydnee Wiley.

Jenkins then reached on an error to score Hope Cain and Taylor Wascavage.

Austin tied the game thanks to a wild pitch and error that allowed the Austin player to take third and home.

Hope Cain got the win, striking out three. She allowed three runs on six hits with no walks.

Other players with hits included Cain, Wascavage and Sarah Ellen Battles.

West Morgan 11, Priceville 0

McKenzie Parker had the only two hits for the Lady Bulldogs against West Morgan.

That included a double for Parker.

Abby St. John took the loss.

Hartselle 7, Falkville 1

Jada Hayes and Emily Lipinski went 2-for-3 lead the Lady Tigers past Falkville.

Hayes had two RBIs and a run scored while Lipinski drove in one run.

Hayes earned the win with four strikeouts, three hits, one run and two walks.

Hope Cain added a triple while Taylor Wascavage, Hannah Jenkins and Sydnee Wiley had hits.

Callie Garner took the loss for Falkville, allowing seven runs on six hits with five walks and two strikeouts. Kaitlynn McMurray didn’t allow a run on two hits in two-thirds of an inning.

Paige Garner reached on a hit and scored the only run on Moore’s double.

Emoni Smith and Alexis Casteel had the only other hits for the Blue Devils.

Hartselle 7, Decatur 1

Jada Hayes was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and one run to pace Hartselle.

Her hits were a solo home run and a RBI double. She also struck out 12 and allowed one run on one hit and one walk.

Ali Forth also went yard with a three-run homer on her only at bat. Hope Cain scored twice on one hit while Hannah Jenkins drove in one run on one hit and Sarah Ellen Battles scored a hit.

Brewer 5, Priceville 3

The Lady Patriots had just two hits, but they took advantage of seven Priceville errors to erase a 3-0 deficit and earn a win Thursday.

Ledbetter and Wilson had the only hits for Brewer.

Mitchell got the win, allowing one earned run on six Priceville hits. Brewer also committed four errors.

Abby St. John allowed five runs on two hits and four walks. Only one of the runs was earned.

McKenzie Parker, Jenna Blankenship and Alexandria Shields hit doubles. Sara Beth Wilson, Heather Owens and Maggie Yambrek also had hits.

Falkville 8, Decatur 0

Paige Garner led the Blue Devils in the win over the Red Raiders with a 2-for-4 effort and three RBIs.

Makenzie Smith, Callie Garner and Cheyenne Wilson also had two hits each. Garner scored twice while Smith had an RBI and a run.

Lyndsey Moore, Sky Engle and Emily Gray also had hits. Gray had a double, two runs and two RBIs.

Alexis Casteel struck out seven during a one-hit shutout. She also had two walks.

Danville 5, Priceville 2

The Lady Hawks took advantage of its six hits to score five runs while Morgan Weatherwax and Savannah Bolton kept the Priceville hitting at bay.

Weatherwax, the starter, allowed two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Bolton allowed just two hits with four strikeouts to get the win in two scoreless innings.

Kristen Dobbins led the way with a 2-for-2 effort with one RBI and one run.

Reagan Burcham and Callie Ryan added doubles while Weatherwax and Bolton had hits. Bolton, Sloan Lindsey, Ryan and Chelsea Hill scored RBIs.

Abby St. John and Heather Owens kept the Lady Bulldogs in it with 2-for-3 efforts. Sara Beth Wilson and Maggie Yambrek also had hits.

Kylie Miller took the loss, allowing three runs on two hits and one walk with a strikeout. Madison Beddingfield also allowed two runs on two hits and a walk.

Danville 6, Brewer 2

Weatherwax led the attack with a 3-for-4 effort and three runs scored.

Sloan Lindsey added two RBIs and a run scored on one hit. Reagan Burcham also added two RBIs on a 1-for-3 effort.

Kellee Stiles had a hit, RBI and run while Savannah Bolton had an RBI. Hannah-Grace Sherrill also scored a hit.

Bolton earned the six-inning win with five strikeouts, one earned run, five hits and two walks.

Watkins led Brewer with two hits while Wilson, Ledbetter and Mitchell added hits.

Wilson struck out just two while allowing five earned runs on eight hits.

Lady Bulldogs lose to Brooks

Priceville’s Lady Bulldogs collected 10 hits in a 13-10 loss to Brooks at home on April 8.

Walks played a key role in the outcome as Priceville gave up 10 while Brooks had three.

Abby St, John paced the Lady Bulldogs at the plate with a double, single, two RBIs and scored two runs. Allison Varner had three singles, an RBI and scored twice. Heather Owens had a single, three RBIs and scored a run. Maggie Yambrek doubled and scored a run. Kylie Miller and McKenzie Parker each singled and scored a run. Anna Catherine Law and Madison Beddingfield each had an RBI.

Kylie Miller was the losing pitcher. She allowed seven runs on two hits while striking out one batter and walking four. Beddingfield started and pitched four innings. She allowed six runs on one hit while striking out three batters and walking six.
