Easter Sunday is when millions of Christians celebrate in a special way the Resurrection of Christ. Unlike Christmas, the date of Easter changes from year to year. It is calculated by identifying the first Sunday after the initial full moon following March 21.

March 25, 1894 – Easter came not with bright sunshine and smiling faces, but was cold and dreary with looks of regret on the faces of those observing the occasion. However, notwithstanding the wretchedly cold weather, there were large attendances at all the churches.

Jan. 25, 1940 – A “Passion Play” representation, most often put on at Easter time, was shown on the screen at the First Methodist Church tonight. It was brought here by the National Bureau for Religious and Educational Films.

March 25, 1951 – An Easter egg hunt for the beginners class of the Methodist church was held at the home of Mrs. Cecil E. Johnson this afternoon.

April 6, 1955 – Bobby Ray Hicks and Jack Brock Long, University of Alabama students, arrived today to spend the Easter holidays with homefolks.

March 4, 1956 – The MCTS concert choir gave a wonderful performance in Talucah tonight. Especially beautiful was “O Mary Don’t You Weep.”

March 30, 1956 – Mrs. Joe (Elizabeth Peck) Speake provided the commentary at tonight’s Easter Parade fashion show presented by the Rainbow Garden Club.

April 14, 1960 – Area grocery stores are currently advertising Easter meals that are both delicious and easy to prepare. Traditionally, the main entrée at the lunch table is a baked ham.

March 30, 1986 – St. Barnabas Episcopal Church of Hartselle held the traditional Holy Week services, climaxing with the Easter Sunday service today. This is St. Barnabas’s first full year in existence, the church having been founded last year.

April 19, 1987 – The sanctuary choir of the First Baptist Church of Hartselle presented its “Resurrection Celebration” today. This service, along with “Christmas Praise,” is the most important worship experience the church provides to members and visitors each year.

April 9, 2009 – The “Easter Egg Scramble” girls fast pitch softball tournament will be held tomorrow. This tournament is for girls 12 and under.

March 27, 2010 – The Hartselle chapter of the Jaycees sponsored an Easter egg hunt at Sparkman Park this morning. Members used a very large number of egg dying kits prior to this event.

April 4, 2010 – Evans Florist, located at 400 Sparkman Street Northwest, has one of this area’s finest assortments of spring flowers. A best seller at present is the “Easter Greeter” bouquet.

April 24, 2011 – Several area youth and their adult leaders from Churches of Christ are participating this weekend in the Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes national convention in Nashville. Friendly competitions are held in such areas as speech, song leading, debate, puppetry and Bible Bowl.

April 12, 2014 – The annual dog bone Easter egg hunt was held this morning at Sparkman Park. The Easter Bunny was present to put smiles on the faces of all children in attendance. The Daystar Church in cooperation with the Kiwanis Club also held its “Easter Extravaganza” at the park.

April 13, 2014 – A highlight of the morning worship service at East Highland Baptist Church was the Annie Armstrong Easter Offering. Hymns sung by the congregation included “Lord, I Life Your Name on High,” “At Calvary,” “Down at the Cross,” “Nothing But the Blood” and “The Old Rugged Cross.”

April 20, 2014 – An Easter Sunrise service is scheduled for Sunday morning at Bethlehem Baptist Church east of Hartselle. The speaker will be Rev. Andrew Patterson, pastor of Gum Springs Baptist.

April 20, 2014 – When it is 11 a.m. in Hartselle, the time when many churches still hold their morning worship services, it is 10 a.m. on Easter Island. The island is located 4,487.7 miles from Hartselle.
