Morgan County jobless rate falls to 6.7 percent

Morgan County’s unemployment rate for March 2014 fell nearly one-half of a percent to 6.7 percent, matching the state’s preliminary unemployment rate.

The ratio represents 3,724 jobless workers, down from 3,968 in February.

The number of employed workers also dropped from 52,018 in February to 51,760 in March, causing the overall workforce to decline by more than 500.

The Decatur metropolitan area also saw a decrease in unemployment, down 0.3 percent to 7.0 percent in March.

However, the state seasonally adjusted unemployment rate increased from 6.4 percent in February to 6.7 percent in March. Nearly 145,000 workers are unemployed statewide, but the state’s employed workforce also increased by almost 7,000 to 2 million workers.

The state’s 6.7 percent unemployment rate is on par with the nation’s 6.7 percent unemployment rate.
