HHS hosts area tournament today, Friday

The Hartselle High School softball team will host the Class 5A, Area 15 Tournament at the Grady and Margie Long Softball Complex beginning today at 4 p.m.

The Lady Tigers will take on No. 4 seed West Point in the opener. Admission is $6 for both days.

Lady Tigers go 3-2-1 at Hoover

Hartselle’s Lady Tigers lost three games, won two and tied one in the Hoover Softball Tournament Friday and Saturday, which featured many of the top teams in Class 6A.

The Lady Tigers fell to Hueytown 6-1 in the first of two pool play games on Friday.

Jada Hayes collected three singles with one RBI, Taylor Wascavage singled and scored a run and Hope Cain, Ashley Boggs and Ali Forth each had a single.

Hayes was the losing pitcher. She allowed six runs on seven hits while striking out five batters and walking one.

Hartselle and Pelham battled to a 4-4 tie in the second pool play game Friday.

The Lady Tigers collected nine hits. Wascavage had a triple, double, single and scored twice. Hannah Jenkins doubled, singled and scored a run, Hayes had a RBI single and scored a run, Boggs had a RBI single and Sittason and Poe each singled.

Hayes was the starting pitcher for Hartselle. She allowed three runs on three hits and walked a batter in two thirds of an inning. Hope relieved for four and one-third innings. She allowed one run on two hits while striking out two batters and walking two.

The Lady Tigers fell to No. 1 Sparkman 1-0 in the opening round of the tournament on Saturday.

Sydnee Wiley had Hartselle’s only hit, a single.

The losing pitcher was Cain. She allowed one run on five hits while striking out six batters and walking one.

Hartselle downed Chelsea 6-1 in a loser’s bracket tournament game on Saturday.

Hayes led the attack with a home run, a double two RBIs and scored two runs. S. Wiley had two singles as two RBIs, Hannah Jenkins had two singles and a RBI, Cain had a double and scored a run, and Sittason and Battles each singled.

Hayes was the winning pitcher. She allowed one run on six hits while striking out nine batters and walking one.

The Lady Tigers scored a 4-1 win over Oak Mouintain in a tournament game on Saturday.

Wascavage had a home run, Hayes had a double. single and two RBIs, S. Wiley had an RBI single, Boggs singled and scored a run and Sittason and Battles each singled.

Hayes was the winning pitcher. She allowed one run on eight hits while striking out eight batters and walking two.

Hartselle was eliminated from tournament play by Huntsville, 3-2.

The Lady Tigers had three hits. Hayes had a RBI single and Wascavage and Boggs each had a single.

Cain was the losing pitcher. She allowed three runs on six hits while striking out five batters.

Hartselle 7, Austin 0

The Lady Tigers defeated Austin 7-0 in their last regular season game on Friday.

Sarah Ellen Battles paced Hartselle’s hitting with a bases-loaded home run. Jada Hayes had a double, single and two RBIs, Taylor Wascavage had a double and scored two runs, Gracie Poe and Sydnee Wiley each singled and scored a run and Hannah Jenkins and Madeline Sittason each singled.

Hope Cain was the winning pitcher. She allowed no runs on three hits while striking out seven batters and walking two.

HHS 11, Cullman 4

Gracie Poe hit a grand slam to pace Hartselle in an 11-4 win over Cullman in an area game Tuesday.

Poe’s homer, which came in her first at bat, capped an eight-run fifth inning to break the game open.

Hope Cain started the rally by driving in Sydnee Wiley on a double. Wascavage brought home Cain on another RBI double. Wascavage later scored on a passed ball.

Hannah Jenkins then drove in Jada Hayes.

Madeline Sittason singled and a Sarah Ellen Battles walk loaded the bases to set up Poe’s heroics.

Sittason score the first run on a wild pitch in the second inning.

Jenkins and Sittason drove in the final two runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Cain, Sittason and Jenkins led the way with three hits apiece while Wascavage and Battles added two his each. Ashley Boggs, Hayes and Wiley had the other hits.

Hayes struck out 11 while allowing four unearned runs on 11 hits with one walk.
