DHS to host 10 basketball play dates
All roads will lead to Danville High School during the month of June as 74 basketball teams from 45 different schools roll in to compete in the school’s 10th Annual Basketball Camp.
Participating teams are allowed to compete with other teams on four different play dates during the summer off-season in accordance with rules of the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
Danville‘s camp will feature 276 games in 10 separate sessions, beginning Mon., June 9, and continuing through Mon., June 30. Some of the participating schools will be represented by varsity, junior varsity and middle school teams.
“This is our biggest year so far and I’m still getting inquiries from coaches wanting to know if we can work them in,” said Danville head girls basketball coach Paul Wilson. “Both of our gyms will be used for most sessions and we’ll have games at the Tom Drake Gym in Falkville on two play dates.
“I like the setup we have here because its convenient for a lot of schools and offers coaches a less expensive alternative to the tradition basketball camps on the college level,” Wilson pointed out. “It’s a fundraiser for us. Members of our basketball team help out as volunteers and our baseball players operate the concessions stand as a fundraiser.”
“Not only do the play dates help players improve their skills but give coaches a heads up on what their players need to work on in the off-season,” he added.
Admission at the door will be $1 per person per session.
Nine games will be featured on the first play date with action starting at 10 a.m. Games will match varsity and JV teams from Sand Rock, Hatton, Bradford, Tenn., Falkville and Priceville
Other schools scheduled to play in following sessions are: Danville, Elkmont, Good Hope, West Point, Cold Springs, West Morgan, Union Hill, Decatur, Clements, Woodville, Brewer, Fairview, Brindlee Mountain, West Limestone, Russellville (Gold and Black), Hartselle, Winston County, Sparkman (Maroon and Black), Huntland, Tenn., East Limestone, Lawrence County, Sardis, Athens, Lexington, James Clemens, Section, Decatur Heritage, Vinemont, Carbon Hill, Phillips Academy, Austin, Holly Pond, Addison and Ardmore.
