Camp ARTselle goes to the beach

Preparations for Camp “ARTselle” are under way again, and the Hartselle Fine Arts Center will be buzzing with excitement and fun during the last week of June.

Camp “ARTselle” will be held June 23-26 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for first through fifth graders. Volunteers will work with campers in all areas of fine arts including dance, music, drama and art.

This annual event has been a part of Hartselle summers for several years. Many campers who grew too old to attend still asked to be a part of camp, so the HFAC added Camp “After Hours” three years ago.

Students in sixth through twelfth grades can volunteer to help with Camp “ARTselle” as well as learn production, music, choreography and improvisation at Camp “After Hours” from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“This year the “After Hours” campers will be very involved in the opening of the production on Thursday night,” camp director Jenny Faulk said. “It will let the older kids see what goes into a theater production and teach them how to run shows. This way they can really make it their own show as they are learning.”

Both camps have elaborate themes that change each year. This year’s theme is “Beach Bop 2014,” which will include 60’s and 70’s old-timey beach music. The production will incorporate artists and songs such as the Beach Boys and “Wipeout.” The HFAC will have beach themed decorations, and campers will make coordinating crafts.

Campers will be provided with supplies, snacks, drinks and a camp T-shirt. Each day campers will need to bring a sack lunch.

Faulk is confident this year is going to be fun and beneficial for all involved.

“The kids are going to get so much out of it,” Faulk said. “It’s going to be another great year. We want all the campers to come with a great attitude and have a great time.”

Registration forms can be found at hartsellefineartscenter.org. Registration is $85 for Camp “ARTselle” and $50 for Camp “After Hours” before June 18. Late registration will continue until the camps are full and is an additional $5.
