Owens to be inducted into Lawrence Sports Hall of Fame

The late Coach O. B. Owens has been selected for induction into the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame.

The banquet will be Sat., July 12, at Moulton Recreation Center with the reception beginning at 5 p.m. and the banquet immediately following. If you wish to attend, please mail the number of tickets that you wish to purchase to Jonna Owens Lee, 7461 Danville Road, Hartselle, AL 35640.

The cost will be $20 per ticket and Jonna would appreciate hearing from those who wish to attend by June 20, so that she can reserve you a seat as the tables will fill up fast.

I want to thank Mike Maddux and Sammy’s Towing and Recovery for taking such good care of me when my explorer broke down on Saturday afternoon in Hartselle. They towed my vehicle and brought me home as well. Thank you and God bless each of you.

Neel United Methodist Women met at Mary McCay’s home Wed., June 4, at 7 p.m. Sixteen members attended.

Michelle Randolph, president, called the meeting to order. Suzanne Randolph conducted the program on “Reaching out to Those Who Are Different – Getting out of Our Comfort Zone.” For an illustration, she used some food snacks of various flavors encouraging members to try the ones they did not like usually.

After the program and business, Alison Siniard served a wonderful meal that she had prepared. It included bacon wrapped water chestnuts, mushrooms stuffed with crabmeat, vegetable dip and crackers, fruit salad, coconut cake, angel food cake with lemon pudding filling and mint tea. Everyone enjoyed the meeting and look forward to the July event.

Belated happy birthday wishes go out this week to Janice Hargett, Dawson Bell and Delbert Vest, all on June 16. Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Ronnie McCaghren and Jada Moore on June 19 and Bari Camper and Dewayne Eddy on June 21.

Happy wedding anniversary wishes go out this week to Steve and Mary Terry for their 26th wedding anniversary on June 21 and Brad and Sherry Anderson for their 34th wedding anniversary on June 22.

Jason and Rachel Douglas attended the North Alabama United Methodist Conference at Birmingham Southern College June 1-4. They were delegates from Neel United Methodist Church.

Peggy Rogers, Pam Chaffin and Evie of Spanish Fort visited at Johnson’s Chapel the third week of May. Our thoughts and prayers are with Peggy and Pam as they deal with illness and the death of Peggy’s husband, Lewie Rogers in March.

Congratulations go out to J.P. and Melinda Haynes of Massey on the birth of their son, Avery Connor Haynes. He was born Thur., June 5. Connor has an older brother, Carson Paul.

Good wishes also go to the Haynes family as they prepare to relocate to their new home on the corner of Mt. Nebo Road and Pleasant View Road. The property was Melinda’s Aunt Pauline Gibson’s. Readers will remember Pauline’s Massey news column in the Hartselle Enquirer. She is now doing well at Summerford Nursing Home.

Shady Grove Baptist Church members express their congratulations to the Danville High School Class of 2014. Those recognize as 2014 graduate church members include Andrea Megan Carter, daughter of Ronnie and Tricia O’Kelley; Crystal Cheyenne Carter, daughter of Ronnie and Tricia O’Kelley; and Patrick Hill Doherty, son of Jim and Monica Doherty.

Extended family graduates are Kyle Brian Alexander, grandson of Diann Alexander, and Cameron Scott Boyd, grandson of Dale and Betty Boyd.

Angie Morgan and Kelsey of Decatur met on Fri., June 6, to finalize plans for the Corinth West Baptist Women’s Day. Angie is the guest speaker and Kelsey will be doing special music. The speech topic is “Choosing Joy.” The main message is that God is the source of true joy.

The event is scheduled for Sat., June 21, at 9:30 a.m. with lunch following the morning program. Those interested are welcome to attend.

Wanita Nisly and her family of Massey enjoyed visiting relatives from Georgia, Ohio and Alabama from June 2-8. Wanita and her nieces and nephews visited Doris Herring Wed., June 4.

Get well wishes go out this week to the Rev. Reese Barnett of Corinth community who recently suffered a stroke. He is a retired Baptist minister and is in rehab at Lakeshore in Birmingham.

All area children and youth are invited to Falkville Public Library’s Summer Reading Program, “Fizz! Boom! Read!” It will be in the Town Hall Courtroom. There will be sessions every Thursday in July at 2 p.m.

Science Quest of Huntsville and Joe Wheeler Electric Co-op representatives will present the programs. One Home schooled family will share experiences and lessons learned with those attending. The first meeting will be informative, have story time and refreshments. On July 31, there will be reading awards ceremony and a pizza party, with prizes of T-shirts, bookmarks, totes and more. Members of Shady Grove Baptist Church remember in loving memory this week, Wesley Garrison from June 11, 1941 to May 31, 2013, Jared “J-Mo” Moore from June 20,1990, to July 30, 2011, Johnnie Hill from June 16, 1921, to Oct. 26, 2007, Bluitt Wallace from June 28, 1920, to March 28, 2000, Docia Collins from June 12, 1916, to Sept. 26, 2010, Ann Haynes from June 25, 1915, to July 29, 2005, and Lillie Bell Dobbins from June 3, 1909 to Nov. 23, 2000.

Corinth West Baptist Women’s Group and friends of Adam Shedd’s family hosted a wedding shower for Adam and Danielle Pearson who will be married in August at Jones Chapel community. She is from West Point and Adam is from Mt. Vernon.

The shower was in the fellowship hall at 2 p.m. on Sun., June 8. Many from the various communities attended and Danielle received many useful gifts. Everyone enjoyed the event and the refreshments provided by the women’s group and family friends. Belinda Ricks of Andrew’s Chapel coordinated the food and Dawn Shedd the decorations.

On Sunday, June 8, Brother Mike Vest, pastor at Danville United Methodist Church delivered the sermon on “Pentecost and Why Are We Here?” at the 9 a.m. worship service. His scripture was Acts 21:1-12.

Pentecost Sunday is commemorating the beginning of church, often called ” the miracle of church.” It is an important day in the Christian year, which begins with the advent and Christmas.
