BOE approves nine new buses

Morgan County School Board approved the purchase of nine new school buses at a cost of $757,943.60 at its regular monthly meeting Thursday night.

Two of the buses ($83,755.08) are equipped to accommodate special needs students while the other seven ($73,804.18 each) are full size with the capacity to accommodate 72 studnets.

The buses will be purchased using Fleet Renewal funds.

“The good thing is we’re able to purchase them outright instead of leasing them,” said Superintendent Bill Hopkins Jr.

Board member Tom Earwood questioned if the buses were put out for bids.”

“We’re buying them under an existing one-year bid that’s still in effect,’ answered Hopkins.

Kevin Gunnison, construction manager for Volkert Inc. gave a report on school construction projects.

“We lost a week at the Priceville site because of all the rain,” Gunnison said. “But that’s something we can make up. quickly when the weather turns around.”

He said curb and gutter has been completed and a dense base grade has been put down on a roadway that encircles the Priceville High School work site.

“Foundations are going down and we’ll be building vertically in a short time,” he added.

Walls and roof framing are in progress at the six-classroom addition at West Morgan Elementary School.

Installation of interior metal stud wall framing and brickwork is in progress at

the administrative office addition at Danville High School;

The existing field house has been demolished and temporary locker rooms have been set up at Brewer High School. The anticipated bid opening date for a new athletic facility is June 19.

The anticipated bid opening date for a major addition and renovation program at Falkville High School is Aug. 5, 2014.

The board acted on other matters as follows:

•Approved an out-of-state field trip for Brewer High School to allow one student and a chaperone to travel to Kansas City, Mo. to compete in the National Skills USA competition June 23-28.

•Approved a low bid of $43,628.55 from Regional Produce to provide produce for the first semester of the 2014-2015 school year

•Approved a low bid of $41,749.25 from Forestwood Farms to provide fresh fruits and vegetables for the first semester of the 2014-2015 school year

•Accepted a $70,506 proposal from Lynn Layton Chevrolet to provide three new service trucks for the maintenance department

•Approved a baseball camp to be conducted at Brewer High School June 19-20

•Approved payment of $4,165 to National School Boards Association for enrollment fees for 7-1-14 to 6-30-15

•Approved a contract for services with Mockingbird Education to provide professional learning services for middle and high school teachers at Mini-Mega for Higher Order Thinking strategies, questioning strategies, classroom management and student engagement on Aug. 5, 2014.

•Approved a contract for services with Christopher Hadyn Blevins to serve as media van driver and textbook processor on an as-needed basis from June 2 to July 31, 2014

•Approved the Big Blue Basketball Camp to be held at Brewer High School on June 9-13

•Approved the Morgan County Board of Education meeting schedule, effective July 2014 through June 2015. Work sessions will be from 5:30 to 6 p.m. and the regular meeting will follow at 6 p.m.

•Approved a quote of $15,500 from Stadium Pros Inc. for the installation of bleachers from the home and visitor sides at the new baseball complex at West Morgan High School.

•Approved a low bid of $27,850 from Construction Specialty Associates Inc .for the re-roofing of the band rooms at Falkville and Danville High Schools.

•Approved a lease agreement with NAMOS/Wells Fargo for one copier to be placed at the Morgan County Special Education Department.

•Approved a job description for a Morgan County Schools facilities and maintenance coordinator

•Approved a Summer Enrichment Program at Sparkman School, June 9-13 and June 16-20

•Approved a Summer Enrichment Program at Danville-Neel Elementary School, June 23-27 and July 14-18

•Approved a Kindergarten Boot Camp at West Morgan Elementary School, July 14-17 and July 21-24

•Approved a Summer Enrichment Program at West Morgan Elementary School, June 9-13 and June 16-20

•Approved the Morgan County Schools salary schedule for 2014-2015, with the exception of the deputy superintendent supplement, effective July 1, 2014.

•Approved the purchase of two (20-passenger) special needs buses at $83,755.08 each and eight (72-passenger) full size buses at $73,804.18 each. The buses will be purchased using fleet renewal funds.

The superintendent recommended and the board approved personnel changes as follows:

•Approved an application for continued salary in lieu of sick leave for Carol Burgess, CNP worker at Falkville High School, effective for 13 days, May 13-30, 23014. Ms. Burgess was injured on the job.

•Approved school-to-school transfers as follows: Crystal Williams from sixth grade math at Falkville High School to first grade at Falkville Elementary School; Johnna Bowling from 4-6 grade special education teacher at Union Hill School to sixth grade special education teacher at Priceville Junior High School, Linda Conwill from K-8 PE teacher at Union Hill School to K-4 PE teacher at West Morgan Elementary School, John Raper from teacher at Lacey’s Spring School to K-8 PE teacher at Union Hill School, Joe Rogers from fifth grade reading and math teacher at Sparkman School to 6-8 SPED and ELA teacher at Priceville Junior High School. •Approved a change of Jill Jones Brown’s contract from 10 to 12 months, effective at the beginning of the 2014-2015 school year.

•Approve a change of Brenda Caudle’s contract from 9 to 10 months as an assistant principal

•Approved the employment of Courtney A. Maxwell as band teacher at Lacey’s Spring, Union Hill and Brewer, effective July 31, 2014. She is replacing Kathy Campbell who retired.

•Approved the promotion/transfer of Clarke Beard from a teacher at Priceville Elementary School to a fourth/fifth grade Union Hill School teacher at Priceville Elementary School to fourth and fifth grade teacher at Union Hill School, effective July 31, 2014.He is replacing Amber Robinson who resigned.

•Approved the transfer/promotion of Amy Cooper as a teacher at Danville Middle School She is replacing Theresa Good who retired.

•Approved the reemployment of Linda Lamons as a CNP worker at Union Hill School and Veronica Lawrence as a CNP worker at Union Hill School, both effective July 31, 2014.

•Accepted the resignation of Sharon Stephenson as technology coordinator at Sparkman School, effective at the end of the 2013-2014 school year

•Approved the assignment of Lane Alexander as a PE teacher at Lacey’s Spring School, effective with the 2014-2015 school year

•Approved the reassignment/reassignment of Kimberly Crow from seventh and eighth grade language arts teacher at Cotaco School to assistant principal and instructional coach at Co taco, effective July 17, 2014. She is replacing David Estes and Carrie Holloway.

•Accepted the resignation of Jamie Andrews as both basketball coach and cheerleading coach at Lacey’s Spring School, effective May 12, 2014

•Approved employee supplemental contract with Edward L. Willis as deputy superintendent at the central office for the 2014-2015 school year

•Approved the promotion of Chad Kelsoe as assistant principal at West Morgan High School, effective July 1, 2014

•Approved the transfer of Crystal Mason from technology aide to office aide/ISS aide at Danville Elementary, effective Aug. 6, 2014 She is replacing Sheryl Davis who retired

•Approved the transfer/[promotion of Todd Stephens to half-time assistant principal (10 months) and half-time risk resource teacher (nine months) at West Morgan Elementary School, effective July 17, 2014, (assistant principal) and July 31, 2014 (teacher)

•Approved the employment of Amie Hall as certified librarian at Lacey’s Spring School, effective July 31, 2014. .She is replacing Betty Roscoe who retired.

•Accepted notice of retirement from Linda Millwood as a regular route countywide bus driver, effective June 1, 2014.
