Maxwell, Wallace face off in license commissioner run-off
Morgan County voters will go back to the polls to decide Republican Party nominees for two county offices, two state offices and a constitutional amendment in a run-off election Tues., July 15.
Voting precincts will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Morgan County Probate Judge Greg Cain said two ballots would be used. One will contain the names of Republican candidates for the four local and state offices and the other will list the constitutional amendment.
Any voter, regardless of party preference, is eligible to participate in the run-off.
“Election officials won’t question voters about which party primary they voted for June 3,” said Judge Cain. “But the amendment was put on a separate ballot to accommodate those who participated in the Democratic Party primary.”
The run-off includes a contest between Sharon Maxwell and Carolyn Wallace for Morgan County License Commissioner.
Maxwell led a field of six candidates in the primary with 5,319 votes or 33.2 percent of the ballots cast. Wallace came in second with 3,637 votes or 23.3 percent.
Maxwell is a newcomer to politics. She is employed with the Morgan County License Department and has served as manager of the Hartselle office for five years. Wallace is the director of the Hartselle Beautification Association and serves as a member of the Morgan County School Board.
“I’m not taking anything for granted even though I received the most votes in my race in the primary.” Maxwell said. “We’re doing the same thing we did before. It worked then and hopefully it will work again on July 15.
“I feel really good at this point because the response I’m getting from the voters is very positive,” Maxwell added. “I just have to keep working hard and do what I can to encourage the voters to go back to the polls and vote again.”
Wallace said she is very appreciative and humbled by a growing number of people who have volunteered to help her in her campaign.
“I’m still working hard to see as many voters as possible while keeping up with my two other jobs – Hartselle Beautification and Morgan County School Board,” Wallace said. “I’m encouraged by the number of voters who supported one of the other candidates in the primary who have told me they’re going to vote for me in the run-off. I urge every voter to please vote again on July 15.”
Three statewide races for Republican Party nominees are on the ballot.
Reese McKinney and John Merrill are in the running for Secretary of State. Dale Peterson and Jim Zeigler oppose each other for State Auditor and Chris “Chip” Beeker Jr. and Terry Dunn are running for Public Service Commission, Place No. 2.
The proposed statewide Amendment Number One relates specifically to the assessments authorized for cotton producers to support a program for the promotion of the production, distribution, improvement, marketing, use and sale of cotton. The question is whether or not to delete the requirement that assessments on cotton producers would be subject to refund.
