Priceville logs win at Pope John Paul II
Priceville’s Bulldogs got their football season off to a fast start as they dominated Pope John Paul II 28-14 in a jamboree game played in Huntsville Thursday night.
The Bulldogs’ varsity had a 28-6 lead after three quarters while JV players lost 8-0 in the final quarter.
Junior quarterback Kaleb Barker recorded an eye-popping performance. He completed 10 of 23 passes for 236 yards and three touchdowns with one interception and ran 13 times for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Luke Mason had three catches for 93 yards and two touchdowns, and Lamar Burch caught two receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. Running back Aaron Cartee had 36 yards rushing on six carries.
“Our varsity defense played well, holding Pope John Paul to under 100 yards of total offense,” said head coach Dirk Strunk. “It also accounted for six quarterback sacks and had 17 tackles for loss.”
He named Dakota Parker, Jacob Vehrs and Bryan Parker as having strong defensive performances.
“Offensively, we struggled a little,” Strunk said, “but I didn’t find anything that can’t be corrected.
“It helps the coaching staff to see how players perform under fire,” Strunk said. “Now we’ll focus on correcting the mistakes and getting the team ready for our first game Friday night.”
