Morris celebrates 100th birthday

Earline Morris of Massey, currently residing at Summerford Nursing Home, was honored by her family with a 100th birthday party Fri., Aug. 15, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the Massey Fire Station Community Center.

Shelby Morris and Gena and Jimmy Simpson were hosts. Carl Penn welcomed everyone. His wife, Betsy, led the opening prayer.

The Rev. Mike Vest, McKendree United Methodist Church pastor, presented the honoree with a plaque. She joined the church Sept. 1, 1926, and has an 88-year membership.

Jimmy Simpson’s band played for the party. Jimmy was a former music instructor at the University of North Alabama in Florence.

Earline was born Aug. 13, 1914, in Southwest Morgan County. Her parents were Johnny and Bertha Harvey. She is very appreciative of the large crowd that attended her birthday celebration.

Also, she was overwhelmed by the beautiful cards she received. Her late husband, Thurman Morris, was also from Morgan County.

Their son, Robert is deceased. His widow, Shelby lives in Decatur and her granddaughter, Gena Simpson, lives near her at Massey. She had cousins and many nieces and nephews who came for the event.

Marty Chambers has been appointed principal at Danville High School. He was principal of the West Morgan Middle School and a graduate of West Morgan High School. Everyone in the community is excited to have him as the new principal. We wish him the best.

Danville High School and the area welcome the new varsity football coach, Josh LouAllen. A preseason game was Thur., Aug. 21, at West Morgan.

Danville Athletics Boosters appreciate a $200 donation from the Morgan County Commission. This money is from the Tourism, Recreation and Convention Fund for the football program.

On Sat., Aug. 16, Lee Greene, an engineer, surveyor and history buff from Hartselle, organized Riders from the Legion and Patriot Guard Riders in a motorcade that passed through Hartselle en route to the Katy-Did marker dedication site on Alabama 157 near Battleground.

Many escorted descendants of the eight Army Air Force crewmembers and passengers who died in a B-52 bomber that crashed near there April 9, 1944. Those killed were Col. Lucius Bass Manning, Capt. Howard Hardy, Capt. Arthur Gratis, Staff Sgt. John Haney, Pvt. Matthew Geoghegan, Pvt. John J. Bailey, Sgt. James R. Smith and 1st Lt. Hugh Williams Jr.

Also in the motorcade were military personnel and local and state government officials. Col. Ken Brown, USAF (retired) presided over the event. U.S. Army veteran Walter Blackman gave the invocation and the Priceville High School JROTC Color Guard posted the colors during the singing of the national anthem.

The speakers were Dr. Herman Stringer, who researched the crash and encouraged the marker being placed, State Sen. Arthur Orr, R-Decatur, State Rep. Ed Henry, R-Hartselle, Morgan County Commission Chairman Ray Long and Kathy Wilder, granddaughter of Col. Manning.

The crewmembers names were read, taps played and Rep. Henry and Dr. Stringer unveiled the marker. A reception with refreshments for the families, military and public officials followed at the Massey Fire Station.

Tim Laney, the former fire chief, was the host. Those who took part in the ceremony and motorcade and the public who attended appreciate Cecil Linderman’s cleanup job on 157 where the event was held.

Cecil lives nearby and his pasture was used for parking. Also, a thank you the State Troopers and Morgan and Cullman County law enforcement officers who helped with traffic control.

Special congratulations go out this week to Wayne and Katie James Kichler on the birth of their daughter, Allison Rae Kichler. She was born July 22 in Fairhope. She weighed 6 pounds and 11 ounces and was 19.25 inches long.

She is the granddaughter of Harlon and Lisa Halbrooks, Leonard and Susan Kichler, Rhonda James and the late David James.

Members of Shady Grove Baptist Church express Christian love and heartfelt prayers this week for the following soldiers: Brian and Rocia Terry in the Army, Justen Terry in the Navy, Brandon Jones in Baghdad, Derek Jones in the Marines, Jeremy White, Wes Parker, Jodee Vick in Afghanistan and Lee Thompson, Brad Wallace and Anthony Thomas. God bless all of our soldiers and their families.

Belated happy birthday wishes go out this week to Christa Campbell on Aug. 25 and Trent Reynolds on Aug. 26.

Happy birthday wishes go out to Lexi Mears on Aug. 27, Andrew Terry on Aug. 28, Jimmy Dobbins on Aug. 29 and Gabriel Norton on Aug. 31.

On Tues., Aug. 19, Corinth West Baptist Women’s group hosted a senior citizens lunch and bingo in the fellowship hall. Gaynell Wilhite gave the devotional, led in prayer requests and blessed the food.

The 21 attendees were from Corinth and other communities. Everyone enjoyed bingo after the meal. Birthdays and anniversaries honorees for August were recognized. The next senior citizens day will be Tues., Sept. 16, at 11 a.m.

Congratulations go out to Adam Shedd of Corinth community and Danielle Pearson of Cullman who were united in marriage at Chapel Valley Farms in Jones Chapel Sun., Aug. 17, at 6 p.m. A reception followed. Corinth West Baptist Church members attended the event.

The Massey School annual reunion has been scheduled for Sat., Oct. 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the Massey Fire Station Community Center. Area churches will be one of the features. Students, teachers and community residents are asked to mark your calendars and spread the word.

Pleasant View Holy Church of Christ held its summer revival Sunday through Friday, Aug. 10-15, at 7 p.m. each night. The visiting evangelist was Brother Charles Williams from the Decatur Holy Church of Christ.

On Wed., Aug. 13, his congregation attended the Pleasant View service. Also attending were Corinth West Baptist and Brother Glenn Miller. Brother Ricky Ball led singing for the revival.
