Hartselle seeing success due to linemen

Mykel Welch, Luke Southerland, Kody Kodra, Cade Holmes, Walker Thompson and Brad Lovill may not get the attention after the game as their teammates might, but their teammates can’t be successful if they don’t do their jobs.

Welch said the lack of attention doesn’t bother him that much.

“It just makes us more humble,” Welch said.

“When one of our guys breaks off a big run, we try to run as fast as we can to celebrate with them,” Southerland said.

The Tigers are enjoying a 3-0 start thanks to what the big linemen have done so far, but they know they have a long way to go before they can have something to celebrate.

“We just have to take it one game at a time,” Lovill said. “It’s a grind especially with the kind of schedule that we have. We have to get better every week.”

Welch, a three-year starter, said he feels closer to his teammates along the line much more this year than last year.

“Last year, we didn’t really know who was going to be starting on the offensive line because of injuries and replacing starters,” Welch said.

“This year, we know each other very well. We’ve hung out all summer. We’re just like a family. When you’re playing on the line, you have know your teammates well.

“I think we’ve really gelled as a unit. It all starts with us. If we aren’t together, then the rest of the team won’t be together.”

They have attributed their success with the help of their position coach, Chad Gladden, and head coach Bob Godsey.

“The coaches push us to be our very best. We know that they have our backs. They only reason why they yell at us is because they know what our potential can be. They want what’s best for us,” Kodra said.

They players are looking forward to this week’s matchup with Decatur.

“Cullman may mean more to a lot of folks, but Decatur means a lot to us,” Kodra said. “It’s always one of the hardest and most physical games that we ever play during the year. We’re looking forward to this week’s game.”
