Shady Grove supports week of student prayer

Members of Shady Grove Baptist Church are encouraging everyone to participate in See You at the Pole Wed., Sept. 24, at 7 a.m. for special prayer. All around the globe, in every time zone, students will be gathering at their flagpoles, praying for their school, friends, families, churches and communities. This is a day committed to global unity in Christ and prayer for your generation. The Global Week of Student Prayer will be Sept. 21 – 27. Students are encouraged to find new and unique ways, places and times to pray throughout the week. Whether you attend public school, private school or home school, gather your friends wherever and whenever and pray. God Bless America.

On Grandparents Day, Sept. 7, Corinth West Baptist’s children presented grandparents at church with gifts of jams and jellies. Their choices were peach, blackberry, raspberry, pear and blueberry from the Dutch Oven Bakery. Donna Smithson spoke to them about grandparents making memories with their grandchildren and the importance of their relationships. Grandparents attending were Larry and Belinda Ricks, Hilton and Nancy Kelly, Shirley Pope, Gaynell Wilhite, Tony and Donna Smithson, Pattie Condo, Jeff and Anita Reid and Glenn and Gayle Miller. This part of the morning worship was sponsored by the women’s group.

Congratulations to the Danville Lady Hawks volleyball team. They finished runner-up in the Class 4-A to 7-A division of the Muscle Shoals First Metro Tournament Sat., Sept. 6. Danville is now 16-2 on the season. Oustanding players were Shelton, Anderson, Harris, Koins, Roberts and Stiles. We are very proud of our Danville Lady Hawks.

The Massey School reunion committee needs photos of local churches for display. They will be returned. Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Cedar Plains Christian and Evergreen United Methodist memorabilia is needed. There are enough materials on McKendree United Methodist Church for display. If you have photos or other items you would like to share, please bring them Sat., Oct. 4, or before if possible. The festivities begin at 2 p.m. and will continue to 5 p.m. at the Massey Fire Station. Everyone is welcome to come and visit. For more information, please call 256-462-3875.

On Sun., Sept. 7, the women’s group at Corinth West Baptist Church met at 10 a.m. Donna Smithson and Shanda Garner presided and Dawn Shedd gave the devotional. The prayer requests were led by Gayle Miller. Plans were made for a senior citizens lunch on Tues., Sept. 16, with roast beef, vegetables and desserts on the menu. Christie Guthrie served a breakfast casserole, fruit, coffee and juice to the women attending.

Special belated happy birthday wishes go out this week to Ronnie Asherbranner and Nathan MacDonald as they celebrated their birthdays on September 7, Evon Vest on Sept. 15 and Billy Vest on Sept. 16.

Happy birthday wishes go out this week to Mark Campbell and Briana Callahan on Sept. 17, Tom Campbell and John Steven Bryant on Sept. 19, and Connie Campbell and Mitchell Bryant Owens on Sept. 20.

Wonderful belated happy wedding anniversary wishes go out this week to Danny and Connie Wallace who celebrated their 35th wedding anniversary Sept.15.

Mt. Vernon hosted the First Congregational Methodist Church District Conference on Sat., Sept. 13. The event began at 9 a.m. Cullman, Blount and some of Lawrence County churches are included in the Union Hill District with Mt. Vernon and Corinth West. There were committee meetings to conduct conference business and a worship service with special singing. Lunch was served in the fellowship hall at noon. Afterwards, a memorial service was held for members who passed away in 2014. A statewide conference will be held in Boaz in October.

Neel United Methodist Women met Wed., Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. at Vonee Mitchell’s home. The meeting was conducted by president Michelle Randolph and the program was presented by Karen Randolph. The title of the program was “Calling to Mission in Our Time.” Twelve attendees enjoyed refreshments served by the hostess. The next meeting will be Wed., Oct. 1.

A bridal tea was held for Courtney Camper, bride-elect of Shane Trenton, Sun., Sept. 7, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the fellowship hall at Shady Grove Baptist Church.

Corinth West Methodist community residents and local singers appreciate those who supported the annual All-Day singing and helped with food on Aug. 24. Special thanks are expressed to Billy Gray’s Quartet for their attendance and entertainment. It was a spirit-filled event and Darrell Maddox, chairman, was very pleased with the turnout. He works all year getting singers, musicians and an audience for the fourth Sunday in August singing.

There will be a Swamp John’s fundraiser at Corinth West Methodist Church  Thur., Oct. 23, from 4 to 7 p.m. Choices will be chicken, shrimp or a combo plate and you can dine in or take out. The charge for the meal, drink and dessert will be $10 per plate. The proceeds will go to the church’s general fund.

Mt. Nebo Baptist Church at Massey has planned a churchwide picnic for Sat., Sept. 20, at noon. This event will be held at West Park in Neel. There will be games for the children, youth and adults. Bring your lawn chairs and picnic foods.

Christian love and heartfelt sympathy goes out this week to the family of George Thompson of Ebenezer community. George passed away on Sept. 6 at Summerford Nursing Home. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Betty Braswell Thompson, also of Summerford Nursing Home.

This month the Falkville Public Library is having a huge sale on books, mostly non-fiction, $1 for hardback books and 50 cents for paperbacks. Please come by and take advantage of these good book offers. Library hours are Monday-Friday from 8 to 5 p.m., closing for lunch from noon to 1 p.m. and closing Wednesday at noon. Everyone is also invited to come read magazines and newspapers and use the computers and the reference books.

Ronnie and Jenny Asherbranner of Massey hosted supper for family and friends on Labor Day, Sept. 1. The following enjoyed Ronnie’s grilled burgers and hotdogs: J. P. and Melinda Haynes, Carson and Avery, Matthew, Alex and Luke Asherbranner, Julie Asherbranner, Joyce Drake, Gina Smith, Lauren Smith, Mal Patterson and Martha Asherbranner.
