Wet-dry petition turned in
Hartselle will have another wet-dry referendum this November, as long as 913 of the 1,307 signatures turned in came from valid voters.
Lee Y. Greene Jr., an organizer of the grassroots petition drive, applauded the efforts of those who helped get the petition circulating over the last week.
“As of Sunday evening, we had 930 valid signatures with eight active petitions still collecting names, ” Greene said. “We collected over 930 signatures in exactly one week’s time. It was a herculean effort by many volunteers who had to keep track of pages of names. Hartselle petitioners had to read the news media articles and videos this week, make a decision about what was best for the city and then find a petition to sign. This effort was carried out by word-of-mouth, social media and the articles and videos of local media coverage.”
The Hartselle City Council must accept the petition by law and call for the election, according to state law. The action item will be on the agenda Tuesday night.
