Carnette Steele Hale Leonard

A graveside service for Carnette Steele Hale Leonard, 91, of Hartselle was Tues., Sept. 23, at 11:30 a.m. at Moulton Memory Gardens with Hartselle Heritage Funeral Home directing.

Mrs. Leonard died Fri., Sept. 19, 2014, at Galleria Woods Nursing Home in Birmingham. She was born Oct. 9, 1922, in Lawrence County to James R. Steele and Lillian Long Steele. She retired from the Decatur City School system after teaching for 29 years. She was selected Alabama Favorite Teacher in 1979. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association where she was president for four years. She was a member of First Bible Church in Decatur. She was preceded in death by two husbands, Verdis A. Hale and Edward Lee Leonard; three brothers, Carl G. Steele, Carlton W. Steele and Henry Steele; and a sister, Pearl Steele.

She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Hale Aycox of Birmingham; twin sister, Arnette Smotherman of Huntsville; two grandchildren; Joshua (Aaron) Aycox of Atlanta, Ga. and Elizabeth Marie Aycox of Troy.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer Association or the American Cancer Society.
