DHS wins Tournament of Champions

Danville went 6-1 Sat., Oct. 4 at the Danville Tournament of Champions, finishing first overall.

During pool play the Lady Hawks were defeated by Madison Academy (25-21, 27-25) and beat Deshler (25-20, 25-12) and Geraldine (25-20, 25-14).

DHS defeated Hatton 25-6, 25-9 in the first round of bracket play and went on to defeat Pope John Paul II Catholic 25-17, 25-16 in the quarterfinals. In the semi-finals, the Lady Hawks defeated Addison 25-23, 25-16. Danville defeated West Morgan in the finals 25-14, 25-12 for the title.

Shelton had a .409 hitting percentage for the day with 85 kills on the tournament. She also logged 42 digs and seven blocks. Stiles also led the team offensively with 15 aces, 27 kills and 29 digs. Harris connected 22 kills and nine blocks. Anderson racked up 129 assists, 31 digs and 14 aces for the day. Koins had 10 blocks, Weatherwax had 26 digs and Regan Burcham had nine aces.

Head Coach Spencer Cole pointed out a few outstanding players.

“Alexis Snow had a big day on defense, as did Morgan Weatherwax and Tatianna Roberts,” Cole said. “A key for our defense was improving our block drastically today, specifically Courtney Watts, Mikayla Koins and Jada Harris. Our serve was solid all day, with Regan Burcham, Kellee Stiles and Charlee Anderson leading the way.”

Danville is now 34-9 heading into the last few weeks before the Area Tournament Oct. 21.
