Three touchdowns in a seven-minute stretch during the second and third quarters proved the difference in last Friday night’s region contest between the Danville Hawks and the Curry Yellow Jackets.  Unfortunately for the Hawks, the touchdowns belonged to Curry as the Yellow Jackets defeated Danville 36-15 spoiling the Hawks homecoming.

Danville took the opening kick and drove to the Curry 40 before turning the ball over on downs. The Yellow Jackets then drove 60 yards in 5 plays with quarterback William Woodley scoring on a 14-yard run.  The PAT was good and Curry led 7-0 with 7:44 left in the opening period.

The game then turned into a defensive battle with each team driving into the other’s territory before turning the ball over on downs. The Danville special teams set up the Hawks late in the second period, recovering a fumbled punt at the Curry 46.

The Hawk offense would capitalize, driving the 46 yards in 7 plays to tie the score on a 1 yard run by Peyton Colburn. Colburn carried the ball three consecutive times on the drive, gaining 31 yards.  His 27-yard run gave the Hawks a first and goal at the Curry 1.

It looked as though the teams would enter the half tied at 7, but the officials, perhaps attempting a football replication of the biblical account of Joshua asking the Lord to allow the sun to stand still, allowed the clock to stand still thus giving Curry one more play.

The Yellow Jackets, much like the Israelites, took advantage and scored on a 6-yard run to take a 14-7 halftime lead. Curry would take that momentum and use it to add to their lead scoring twice more in the third quarter to take a commanding 29-7 lead.

Danville scored its final touchdown on the opening play of the final quarter. Senior RB Drake Sapp got the TD on a 1-yard run. Colton McCay converted the two point attempt cutting Curry’s lead to 14 (29-15) with 11:54 left in the game.

Danville would get no closer as Curry scored the final touchdown of the night with just 58 seconds left, making the final score 36-15 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.

Danville, now 1-5 on the year, will travel to Walker County on Friday for a region matchup with the Cordova Blue Devils. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
