This year’s Morgan County Tournament looked more like an elite invitational than a county round-up with five AHSAA ranked teams battling it out.

Danville’s Lady Hawks went undefeated to take home the title and giving them an overall record of 41-10.

Morgan County teams include Decatur Heritage (No. 3 in 1A), Falkville, West Morgan (No. 4 in 3A), Priceville (No. 10 in 4A) Danville (No. 1 in 4A), Brewer, Decatur, Hartselle (No. 5 in 6A) and Austin.

The tournament was held at West Morgan this year. Two rounds of pool play were followed by a single-elimination tournament.

In pool play, Danville defeated Austin 16-25, 25-7, 15-9 and Brewer 25-18, 25-12. They beat Priceville 25-22, 25-10 in the first bracketed round and went on to put out Hartselle 25-14, 25-23 in the semifinals.

The Lady Hawks faced West Morgan in the final round. Danville downed the Rebels in straight sets 25-18, 25-19.

Danville head coach Spencer Cole said the final round was an exciting match.

“In the finals, we jumped out to early leads in both sets and it looked like we might run away with it, but West Morgan came back both times, pulling within 4 or 5,” Cole said. “It was a team effort. Our usual suspects played well in the finals, and Regan Burcham did a great job at the serving line, not only with aces but with getting them out of system.”

Danville’s stats for the day included 62 kills, three blocks, 36 digs and six aces from Sydni Shelton. Jada Harris logged 21 kills, and six blocks, five of which came from the final match. Kellee Stiles had 20 kills, 32 digs and six aces on the day. Mikayla Koins came away with 17 kills and five blocks. Charlee Anderson racked up 107 assits, 29 digs and six aces. Courtney Watts had three blocks and seven aces. Alexis Snow and Morgan Weatherwax finished with 19 and 17 digs, respectively. Regan Burcham had five aces.

Hartselle was undefeated in pool play, beating Decatur Heritage 25-5, 25-15 and Falkville 25-10, 25-14 before falling to Danville in the semifinals.

Megan Zuck led Hartselle offensively with 27 kills, one ace, three blocks and nine digs on the day. Madelyn Cheatham had 11 kills, five blocks and two digs. Jordan Barbery logged 30 assists, one kill, three aces and two digs. Gabrielle Bili added 26 assists, one kill, two aces and two digs. Bailey Powell tallied nine kills, two blocks and four digs. Claire Forsythe had eight kills and one block. Kayla Key had six kills and seven blocks. Katy Beth Bole finished with three kills, one assist, one ace, five blocks and three digs.

Hartselle is now 30-19 on the season and 6-0 in 6A Area 15.

Priceville split their pool play, beating Decatur 25-17, 25-5 and losing to West Morgan 25-16, 25-9, before falling to Danville in the first bracketed round.

The Lady Bulldogs lost their senior outside hitter Alison Varner to an ankle injury in the first set against Danville. This is Varner’s second ankle injury of the season.

Priceville’s team leaders included Shyanne Stackhouse with 10 kills and five blocks, Kristen Skinner with four kills, Tori Vehrs with 20 assists, Varner with five kills and four blocks and Whittney Clark with 11 digs.

The Lady Bulldogs are now 23-18 for the season.

Area tournaments will begin next week.
