The Falkville Blue Devils are now 4-4 after beating the Southeastern Mustangs at Burl Vest Stadium to end Homecoming week Friday night.

Southeastern started off strong, scoring first on their initial drive of the night.  Mauris Zamora broke free for a rushing touchdown with 8:30 left in the first quarter.

Falkville answered four drives later with a rushing touchdown of their own early in the second quarter, tying the game at 6 apiece. Quarterback Ryan Sullivan scrambled and ran 64 yards into the end zone on the first play of the drive.

Falkville’s halftime show introduced the Homecoming court and their attendants. Senior Callie Garner was named Falkville’s 2014 Homecoming Queen. Falkville’s Class of 1965 Homecoming Queen was on hand to do the crowning 50 years after she was crowned herself.

The Blue Devils got off to a rocky start in the second half with a back to back fumble and bad snap, which were both recovered for a loss of yards. Their next drive was a long but fruitless effort that drove them 51 yards only to turn the ball back over to the Mustangs at their own 27-yard line.

Sullivan put the Devils back on track by logging another rushing touchdown with 8:26 left to go in the third, and the Devils missed a two-point conversion attempt, pulling ahead 12-6. Sullivan also made an interception in the end zone late in the third quarter, thwarting a Southeastern score.

Falkville’s Patrick Knowles scored the first of three fourth-quarter touchdowns off a long punt return mid-way through the quarter to bring Falkville’s lead to 20-6 after a two-point conversion. Sullivan tallied his third rushing touchdown of the game on the next Blue Devil drive, which covered 60 yards in less than two minutes. Sullivan’s PAT was good, bringing the score to 27-6.

Southeastern fumbled the resulting kickoff, which was recovered by Falkville on the Southeastern 38. The Blue Devils failed to capitalize on the opportunity with a failed field goal attempt after a 3-minute drive.

Falkville’s Allen Vinson intercepted a pass from Southeastern’s quarterback Bradley Atkinson and ran it into the end zone, putting Falkville ahead 33-6.

Southeastern was finally able to score again on their final drive of the night when Atkinson connected with receiver Austin Cates. The Mustangs brought the score to 33-13 with an extra point and only a minute left on the clock.

With their win over Southeastern, Falkville is now 1-4 in Class 2A Region 6. Next week they will travel to regional opponent Tanner, who is undefeated in regional play.
